Have you ever wondered why Jack the Ripper has that name? I'll explain it very simply. Whitechapel, in 1888, was a dump filled with poor people, crowded together due to the increasing modernization of London.
A dark area, however, not all that darkness came from the suburbs; the press also played a role in sensationalizing the crimes, which were quite common.

But how to sell newspapers in the midst of that scenario? They had to constantly reinvent themselves, and on August 31, 1888, an opportunity they couldn't pass up arrived, when the first victim appeared: Mary Ann Nichols (Polly).
We know very well that we may never know Jack's real name; there are certainly two main suspects, but nothing concrete.
The press at that time, a newspaper, was more visionary in this regard, and that's why when they arrested the first suspect, a Polish-Jewish shoemaker named John Pizer, they nicknamed him Leather Apron. However, not many people know that this was the first name circulated for the famous murderer of sex workers.
Ultimately, John was acquitted after providing alibis that convinced the jury.
The name Jack the Ripper comes from the first of many letters and notes that arrived in different places.

This letter, known as Dear Boss, arrived at the News Agency on September 27, 1888. The sender claimed to be the murderer and mocked the police:
"I laughed when you talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron amused me greatly. I'm against prostitutes and I won't stop gutting them until they catch me."

This letter is signed Jack the Ripper, and is responsible for the most famous name in the history of serial killers. Three days later, Catherine Eddowes was found murdered. Among the many mutilations presented, one of her ears had been cut off, as promised in Dear Boss by the alleged killer.

Even in a later letter called Saucy Jacky, the alleged killer wrote: "I wasn't joking when I tipped you off; you'll hear about Saucy Jacky's work tomorrow." Indeed, this letter coincided with a double murder in the same town.
This simple circumstance keeps this character's name at the top of the list to this day. Consider one detail: he's probably one of the most studied serial killers, with the fewest crimes to his name: five women in total, and for some specialists, only four.

Finally, I'll leave you with a detail no less significant regarding the matter of the letters. The most famous isn't the first, nor Saucy Jacky. It's one received by the police via mail on October 16, 1888, and titled From Hell. It was accompanied by something gruesome: half a human kidney; the other half, the sender claimed, he had eaten. A brief note signed: Catch me if you can. With it, I bid you farewell:
From Hell
Mr. Lusk.

Sir, I'm sending you half of the kidney I took from a woman. I preserved it for you. I fried the other piece and ate it; it was very nice. I might send you the bloody knife I used to remove it, if you wait a little longer.
Catch me if you can.

La prensa entonces, un periódico, fue más visionario en este sentido y por eso cuando arrestan al primer sospechoso, que era un zapatero judío polaco, llamado Jhon Pizer, lo apoda: Delantal de Cuero, sin embargo no muchos conocen que este fue el primer nombre que circuló del famoso asesino de trabajadoras sexuales.
Finalmente, Jhon fue absuelto al proporcionar coartadas que convencieron al jurado.
El nombre de Jack el Destripador se debe a la primera de muchas cartas y notas que llegaron a diferentes sitios.

Esta es la simple circunstancia que mantiene hasta hoy en la cima el nombre de este personaje. Analicen un detalle: probablemente sea el asesino serial, entre los más estudiados, con menos crímenes a sus espaldas, cinco mujeres en total, y para algunos especialistas, solo cuatro.

Para finalizar, les dejo un detalle no menos significativo en el asunto de las cartas, la más famosa no es la primera, ni Saucy Jacky, es una recibida por la policía vía correo, el 16 de octubre de 1888 y titulada From Hell, esta venía acompañada por algo espeluznante, la mitad de un riñón humano, la otra mitad, afirmaba el remitente, se la había comido. Una breve nota firmada como: Atrápeme si puede. Me despido con ella:
Desde el infierno
Mr. Lusk.

Señor, le envío la mitad del riñón que me llevé de una mujer. Lo preservé para usted. El otro trozo lo freí y me lo comí, fue muy agradable. Puede que le envíe el cuchillo ensangrentado con el que se lo saqué, si espera un poco más.
