The herd trap / La trampa de la manada (eng-esp)

As a child, I played Captain Onion. This is a children's game where all the kids imitated what the leader (Captain Onion) did.
If the captain touched his nose, all the players touched their noses. If the captain sat down, everyone sat down. Back then, it was fun because you didn't have to think, just follow along.

That was never a problem. The real problem is that, today, many adults still live as if life were a game. It seems some believe that if everyone does something wrong, it ceases to be wrong. They hide behind the crowd to justify their actions. "If everyone is doing it," they think, "there must be a reason." And with that excuse, they become imitators, followers, people who have delegated their conscience to the opinions of others.

But life, however rich it may be, is not a mathematical equation. It doesn't work like algebra. In real life, in negative situations, multiplying negative by negative doesn't equal positive. If everyone lies, the lie doesn't become truth; it remains a lie.
If everyone is corrupt, corruption doesn't transform into honesty. If everyone mistreats someone, the mistreatment remains an atrocity.
The nature of actions doesn't change because of the number of people who perform them. Wrong is still wrong, whether one person does it or a million do it.

I've seen people do things they knew were wrong just because "everyone else was doing it or saying so." These actions range from minor tax and payment cheating to ethically questionable decisions in their businesses. And when asked, they always give the same answer: "It's normal. It's what's expected." They've surrendered their capacity for judgment to the masses. They've given up thinking for themselves.
Acting according to one's conscience is precisely the opposite of all that. Acting from our conscience means having the ability to stop, to observe, to ask ourselves: "Is what I'm about to do right or wrong?" And to answer honestly, regardless of what others say.
It's knowing that social pressure can push you, but it doesn't have to move you. It's understanding that courage also consists of being the only one who doesn't touch their nose when the captain orders it, if you know that gesture is absurd or harmful.

I have learned, through many difficult times and experiences essential to who I am today, that conscience is not something to be voted on. It is not decided by majority vote. The positive or negative quality of my actions is determined by their very nature, not by the number of people who perform them.
If I act wrongly, even if I have the whole world behind me, I am still acting wrongly. And if I act rightly, even if I am alone, I am still acting rightly. That's the only compass that truly works. The herd might give you warmth, but it won't agree with you if you're wrong.

De niña jugaba al Capitán Cebollita. Este es un juego infantil donde todos los muchachos imitaban lo que hacía el líder (el Capitán Cebollita).
Si el capitán se tocaba la nariz, todos los jugadores se tocaban la nariz. Si el capitán se sentaba, todos se sentaban. En aquel entonces,era divertido porque no había que pensar, solo seguir.

Aquello nunca fue un problema. El verdadero problema es que, en la actualidad, mucha gente adulta sigue viviendo como si la vida fuera ese juego. Tal parece que algunos creen que si todos hacen algo incorrecto, ese algo deja de ser incorrecto. Se escudan en la masa para justificar sus acciones. "Si todo el mundo lo hace", piensan, "por algo será". Y con esa excusa, se convierten en imitadores, en seguidores, en personas que han delegado su conciencia en la opinión de los demás.

Pero la vida por más rica que sea, no es una ecuación matemática. No funciona como el álgebra. En la vida real, en las situaciones negativas, multiplicar negativo por negativo no da positivo. Si todos mienten, la mentira no se convierte en verdad, continúa siendo una mentira.
Si todos son corruptos, la corrupción no se transforma en honestidad. Si todos tratan mal a alguien, el maltrato no deja de ser una salvajada.
La naturaleza de las acciones no cambia por el número de personas que las realicen. Lo incorrecto sigue siendo incorrecto, lo haga uno o lo haga un millón.

He visto a gente hacer cosas que sabían que estaban mal solo porque "todo el mundo lo hacía o decía". Estas acciones van desde pequeñas trampas en los impuestos, en pagos, hasta decisiones éticamente dudosas en sus empresas. Y cuando se les pregunta, siempre responden lo mismo: "Es que es lo normal. Es lo que se espera". Han entregado su capacidad de juicio a la masa. Han renunciado a pensar por sí mismos.
Actuar por conciencia es justamente lo contrario de todo eso. Actuar desde nuestra conciencia, es tener la capacidad de parar, de observar, de preguntarte: "Esto que voy a hacer, ¿está bien o está mal?". Y responder con honestidad, sin importar lo que digan los demás.
Es saber que la presión social puede empujarte, pero no tiene por qué moverte. Es entender que la valentía también consiste en ser el único que no se toca la nariz cuando el capitán lo ordena, si sabes que ese gesto es absurdo o dañino.

Yo he aprendido, a base de muchísimos ratos difíciles e imprescindible para lo que soy hoy, que la conciencia no se vota. No se decide por mayoría. La cualidad positiva o negativa de mis acciones la da su propia naturaleza, no la cantidad de personas que las realicen.
Si actúo mal, aunque tenga al mundo entero detrás apoyándome, sigo actuando mal. Y si actúo bien, aunque esté solo, sigo actuando bien. Esa es la única brújula que realmente funciona. La manada te puede dar calor, pero no te va a dar la razón si no la tienes.
