I've seen many trends come and go. In clothing, music, literature, and lifestyles. I remember when everyone wore their hair a certain way. A few years later, that same style was considered embarrassing. I remember the TV series everyone watched that no one remembers today. I remember the books that sold millions of copies and are now never even reprinted.

Fashions have something appealing about them. They make you feel part of something. They connect you to your time. They give you conversation starters at dinner parties. But they have a problem: they expire. And when they expire, they leave you with the feeling of having invested energy in something that wasn't worth it. Like filling a cooler for a five-minute trip.

Classic is different. Classic never dies. It may lie dormant, decades may pass without anyone mentioning it, but it always returns. Because what's classic isn't a matter of era. It's a matter of essence. A classic novel isn't classic because it's old. It's classic because it speaks of things that don't change: love, death, ambition, betrayal. A classic suit isn't classic because your grandfather wore it. It's classic because it looks good on any body in any decade.

For years I followed trends. I read what everyone else read. I watched what everyone else watched. I shared everyone else's opinions. And then there was a moment when I realized I didn't really know what I thought. I only knew what most people thought. It was an uncomfortable discovery. Like looking in the mirror and not recognizing yourself.

That's when I started to change. Before buying something, I ask myself: Is this something that interests me, or am I only interested because it's being advertised? Will this last, or will I forget it next week? I don't always get it right. But at least now I can tell the difference. Now I can read Dostoevsky without feeling like I'm missing out on the latest bestseller. I can listen to Billie Holiday without thinking I should be listening to whatever's on the radio.

Fashions aren't inherently bad. The problem is letting yourself be swayed by trends without discernment. It's turning your own opinion into a mere reflection of what others dictate. That makes you fragile. Because if your taste depends on what's fashionable, when fashion changes, you're left without taste. And then you desperately need the next trend to feel like you exist again.

Classic style gives you independence. You don't need anyone's validation to enjoy it. You don't need it to be on the lists. Classic style is there, waiting. And when you find it, you don't let it go. Because you know it won't disappoint you. Because you know that in ten years you'll return to it and it will still speak to you.

Today I try to raise my children in that direction. Not so they despise new things, but so they develop their own discernment. So they know that a song isn't good just because it's played a thousand times. So they know that a book isn't important just because an influencer recommends it. I want them to have their own discernment. To be able to distinguish between what burns and what warms. Between what fades and what remains.

He visto pasar muchas modas. En la ropa, en la música, en la literatura, en la forma de vivir. Recuerdo cuando todo el mundo llevaba el pelo de una determinada manera. Unos años después, esa misma manera daba vergüenza ajena. Recuerdo las series que todo el mundo veía y de las que hoy nadie se acuerda. Recuerdo los libros que vendían millones y que ahora ni se reeditan.

Las modas tienen algo atractivo. Te hacen sentir parte de algo. Te conectan con tu tiempo. Te dan temas de conversación en la cena. Pero tienen un problema: caducan. Y cuando caducan, te dejan con la sensación de haber invertido energía en algo que no merecía la pena. Como llenar una nevera portátil para un viaje de cinco minutos.

Lo clásico es distinto. Lo clásico no muere. Puede que duerma, que pase décadas sin que nadie lo mencione, pero siempre vuelve. Porque lo clásico no es una cuestión de época. Es una cuestión de fondo. Una novela clásica no lo es porque sea vieja. Lo es porque habla de cosas que no cambian: el amor, la muerte, la ambición, la traición. Un traje clásico no lo es porque lo usara tu abuelo. Lo es porque sienta bien a cualquier cuerpo en cualquier década.

Durante años me dejé llevar por las modas. Leía lo que todos leían. Veía lo que todos veían. Opinaba lo que todos opinaban. Y hubo un momento en que me di cuenta de que no sabía qué pensaba yo realmente. Solo sabía qué pensaba la mayoría. Fue un descubrimiento incómodo. Como mirarte al espejo y no reconocerte.

Empecé a cambiar entonces. A preguntarme antes de consumir algo: ¿esto me interesa a mí o me interesa porque lo están promocionando? ¿Esto me va a durar o lo voy a olvidar la semana que viene? No siempre acierto. Pero al menos ahora distingo. Ahora puedo leer a Dostoievski sin sentir que me estoy perdiendo el último bestseller. Puedo escuchar a Billie Holiday sin pensar que debería estar escuchando lo que suena en la radio.

Las modas no son malas en sí mismas. Lo malo es dejarse llevar por ellas sin criterio. Es convertir la opinión propia en un reflejo de lo que dictan los demás. Eso te hace frágil. Porque si tu gusto depende de lo que está de moda, cuando la moda cambia, te quedas sin gusto. Y entonces necesitas desesperadamente la siguiente moda para volver a sentir que existes.

Lo clásico te da independencia. No necesitas que nadie te valide para disfrutarlo. No necesitas que esté en las listas. Lo clásico está ahí, esperando. Y cuando lo encuentras, no lo sueltas. Porque sabes que no te va a defraudar. Porque sabes que dentro de diez años volverás a él y seguirá diciéndote algo.

Hoy intento educar a mis hijos en esa dirección. No para que desprecien lo nuevo, sino para que tengan criterio. Para que sepan que una canción no es buena porque la pongan mil veces. Para que sepan que un libro no es importante porque lo recomiende un influencer. Quiero que tengan su propio termómetro. Que sepan distinguir entre lo que quema y lo que calienta. Entre lo que pasa y lo que queda.
