Powering Up HIVE - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
I am not a Clint Eastwood fan but he is a legend in media. There is another Whale who is associated with Clint Eastwood; I do not always get along with this Whale but I think he is a cool dude. I am weird and hard to deal with. I have a lot to say and I speak my mind.
Speaking your mind and being honest is not something most people appreciate in today's society.
I am not unique but I am for sure a contrarian. Moving against the grain is a personality trait more than anything else imo. People tell me to stop being myself all the time; but it is hard for me to be something I am not.
I think Powering Up HIVE is a lot of fun. I like to party. I like to have a wild time. I like to get freaky but I do not like freakshows; there is a difference.
I powered up HIVE because I think HIVE is undervalued. For me this was an unleveraged long trade; I like these trades because I do not need to worry about getting liquidated.
Being a short seller or a margin trader is very different. The market can stay irrational longer than you can remain solvent (This statement is often associated with John Maynard Keynes). I am a steward of knowledge so I like to remain solvent LOL.
Powering up is a lot of fun. I am a documented addict on this chain. I get very obsessed with things. Powering up is addictive to me but at the same time I do not like to get obsessed with power. I refuse to get obsessed with power. This is my predicament.
My main predicament is, I think HIVE is undervalued but I do not like being in a position of power.
The good part of powering up HIVE is, it is a lot of fun. The bad part of powering up HIVE is it gives you power over the network.
I do not want to have power here. I DO NOT want to be responsible for things here. I just want to have a good time on HIVE. Some people in the HIVE ecosystem have been pushing me towards the idea that me powering up means I am now responsible for things here. This means I cannot use my stake as I wish on HIVE unless I want to lose social capital.
This is the bad part of powering up HIVE. I cannot buy HIVE and use it to maximize my return without being treated like something grand. I do not want to be grand, I do not want to be treated differently, I want to be a man of the people.
When I say I want to be a man of the people it sounds weird in today's society. People love power. People love to be in control. I only want to be victorious in my trade. There is a difference.
The ugly part of powering up HIVE is it comes with a lot of social pressure. You get put into a box if you power up "too much" on this chain. You become an other to the people (to the people on here today anyways).
I do not want to be associated with power. I want to be a man of the people. I want to be a good person.
I regret powering up HIVE but it is also one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. This is a weird thing to say but welcome to reading my diary LOL.
My diary is for me but it is also for you the people. My diary is for ALL people who actually want to know what I am thinking. My diary is for people who actually want to know what I am going through. Life is hard.
I do not want to be here on HIVE. But I am so happy I am here today. HIVE is weird and it is complicated. I am weird and I am complicated.
The ugly part about me is I am not a man of steel. I am not perfect. I have made A LOT of mistakes.
I have done many evil things in my life. I have danced with the devil in the streets. But I have also had positive religious experiences. I have also embraced the devil. But I am convinced God exists because I have embraced both God and Satan in my life. What is God? What is Satan? That is anyone's guess.
I am a man filled with emotions. I am a man filled with good and evil. I am only human.
I have a really good memory. This is blessing and a curse. I remember every bad thing I have ever done and it is so painful. It keeps me awake at night and I hate it. But I love life. I love God.
To those reading my diary, welcome to ME. I am relentless, I am filled with evil but I want to be a good person.
We cannot undo bad things that we have done in our lives. I am convinced that doing bad things taints your soul. But doing good things does make a difference in how your soul feels.
I want to good on HIVE. But I do not want to be associated with power.
I am not rich by western standards. I did not buy HIVE because I think I will get rich. I bought HIVE because there is a chance I can get rich. Money is the root of all evil; I am only human.
I do not play 4D chess. I do not try to predict the future. But to me buying HIVE is like an option contract. I am making an aggressive bet. I am betting that the people here will adjust and I do not need to do anything but buy HIVE. Maybe the people will not adjust? Maybe I will lose money? Either outcome is ok with ME. That is the bet.
I do not regret powering HIVE. I am happy I powered up HIVE.
I believe in HIVE and am long time investor. Right now I am buying Hive via P2P peer to peer trade and powering up all the Hive. Buying from an exchange is a hectic process so avoiding it at the moment. Also at the same time my target for HIVE Power this year is to get to 350K+ HP...cheers and good luck with all the investment in Hive token..

Well I don't understand those power up days. I do believe that is always the first of the month. The ones who does this are just missing out on free Hive. They save up all their liquid Hive until the first of the month and then power up.
I power up when I do have enough liquid hive to power up. This helps growing my account faster, has an immediate impact on my VP and interest. If I would live it as liquid Hive, it just stays liquid Hive.
But we are on different sides in the Hive universe. If I do power up, it wouldn't be even start a ripple in the ocean. For the big stakeholders it could cause a real wave, in some effect even a tsunami. No problems with that. Because like you write, the more HP the bigger the responsability for most, for sure in the minds of the plakton.
While I don't have a big stake in Hive, I do feel and act like a hive whale, trying to protect Hive and try to add value to the chain.

On the Cabal stuff, usually (not always but usually) when I see people talking about "the cabal" it is within the context of downvoting. People make a lot of accusations on the internet in general so it is not too surprising that happens here. I try to be open minded but some of the conspiracy stuff is pretty draining and I would rather focus on the positive things I like about HIVE.
That's definitely an unfortunate byproduct of powering up. I had never really considered that, though I have a long way to go before I am anywhere near that level. I say you should just do whatever you want. The people that matter will understand, and the people that don't can take a hike. I think ultimately it speaks more to their character than yours if they are placing unrealistic expectations on you.

I am not sure I agree with defunding the front ends. Like it is really not an absurd about of money they ask for and that is how most people use the platform is with those front ends. I have seen some people recommend the front ends advertise they are a platform build on HIVE which makes sense to me. That being said, unless we have better options I think pulling the plug on some of the DHF is a bad idea without some long-term plan for what HIVE will do.
Each proposal is different and I try to look at each proposal differently.
I also think HIVE paying maintenance for the simple things people use makes sense. Should we pay maintenance? Idk, but the idea of paying maintenance does make sense to me.
At the same time I do not think things here will ever be perfect. Like there are always going to be things that can be adjusted to improve the ecosystem.
100% important is to talk about.
Without we openly pointing out things, onchain and point to the witneeses and holders, nothing will change.
And changes need to happen. I rather have hive at 2$ and a smaler stake as hive at 0.01$ and a whale size one. For this we need to bring a user maxing mentallity. Defund everything that hurts user growth, rethink rewarding ( to a revenue model) not replace it. But math is the same if we reduce from 14% inflation to lets say 4%.
This way we can start ignore Downvoting by "abuse" since the impact is around 70% by default reduced.
From here Front ends needs to think about revenue models, and you know what? Selling RC subscriptions ( cheap as long we have a lot unused). like Peak D premium membership with some RC so you can ship post with your friends and never care about rewards, politics, the token itself or whatever. Just having fun.
Rewards make IMO everything gay and limit rewards for users ( since devs think rewarding on hive is solved). Rewards should be more a donation ( i would name it that), add a additional like button ( that can have a token from frontends, but can also do nothing). So users can like each other.
Most things are so easy to implement, but devs thinks they make no difference (because they are devs not marketers).
Chain level linkes would be also ok, a button that does nothing but shares to all front ends.

I am not sure it is impossible for rich people to blend in. I have met wealthy people that wear normal clothes and go to normal restaurants. Very down to earth wealthy people do exist.
I think a lot of how wealthy people are perceived is kind of cultural as well. I also think movies from the US don't help, I think it distorts a lot of people's perceptions.
Most people I know personally live paycheck to paycheck cause cost of living is so high in the west.
HIVE is weird because anyone can see your wallet and we talk to each other here. It is actually really interesting. Like imagine if when you met someone you could see their bank account. That would be super weird but that is basically what HIVE is like lol.
If you want to lower your responsibility for having soooo much stake, delegate it to people you think will improve your investment.
Any responsibility for what they do can be dodged by revoking the delegation, but properly selecting people to enhance will strengthen hive.
IF you want to keep the curation rewards, simply follow them on a trail with a small vote that can also be revoked upon poor behavior.
Or, use an alt account to do it.
Hive still has all the potential that kept the earliest adopters here coming up on 10 years, but with the reputation we have in the market for being difficult and continued reinforcement of that reputation, any mass adoption will be impeded.
Success in the hive should be hard, but add in the reap of the pool by people operating on a zero cost basis and it is not compatible with folks that have to buy in at retail.
Who buys in to be diluted by people that care nothing about them and say as much in all that they do?

Since search is utterly non-functional on Hive, the record of my comments and discussions regarding that project are buried tens of thousands of comments back that would literally take me hours to slowly go back and look for in my catalog. I'm not going to do that.
The concept is easy enough to convey simply, and has zero risk to the capital involved in the delegations. Starting small enables vigilance for cheaters to be easy to do, and after a month or two there would be enough demonstrations of what to watch out for to enable scaling.
I wouldn't recommend increasing delegation size either, but increasing the number of modest delegations instead, as that reduces temptation to cheat, while increasing breadth of curative impact.

This has been a weakness for the platform since it's inception. It is what caused Hive to exist, because Sun Yuchen just bought enough stake to govern the platform at will. It isn't just you that suffers from the power of stake to govern, but the platform itself.
I hope I can relieve some of your concern regarding the following:
This is a common misquote. The actual quote is 'The love of money is the root of all evil.' I hope the difference relieves your concern that you cannot have stake and be good, because the difference between having money and loving money is far more than merely pedantry. People that love money generally sublimate more appropriate targets for their affection, which are primarily other people. Jesus was saying that causes them to do bad things to people in order to gain more money, because they do not love people enough to be good to them and instead harm them to get that paper. Robbery, fraud, and all sorts of crimes are committed directly to gain money, and many, many other indirect ways to gain money through doing people wrong also bedevil us.
Simply having money isn't evil. You can have immense fortune and live in love with good people and purpose to do them good. Often this costs money, and this can result in fiscal imprudence. If financial prudence is more important than social prudence (i.e. being good to good people) then people that love money more than people will neglect to do good for people, and this seems to me to be the reason the love of money is the root of evil. Having money isn't evil as long as doing good to good people is more important to you.
As to being othered because you have money, that isn't something I will do. I don't much care about money, but I do care about people, and I hope that principle will always guide how I treat you, as I hope it guides how I treat everyone else, too. Stake attracts the attention of people obsessed with it, and because I am not obsessed with stake I find interacting with people obsessed with it usually disappointing, as the values and principles I and such folks express usually aren't very compatible. You may find that to be true as well, and this will make your enjoyment of Hive (and your stake) dependent on the company you keep here.

I agree with you. I think too many people focus on getting money without thinking about long-term what they want that money for.
I think a lot of people do want money to do good things at first but then they get lost along the way. Money is very addictive and I try to be careful and adjust when I am not being wise but being greedy.
I have also made mistakes with money in the past. Like just giving stuff away for free gets weird a lot of the times. I think the "teach a man to fish" is a better approach and more sustainable for both parties.

You don't have to use the power to control the platform. You can use it to make a difference in the lives of many, many people. Spread that VP around. Visit bloggers who don't get votes. Uplift the ones who are ignored. Adopt a few who are just beginning to blog but have potential. Delegate to some who seem to be good and yet have no power to act on the platform. You can do a lot of good. Look at the granular. It's a wonderful thing to have power and not feel that power gives you privilege. The temptation can go to your head. Flattery, followers. But have pity on these also, for they are just looking for a way in. Having power is wonderful in such a small universe as Hive, if you keep your perspective.
Ahh... guilt is out of style, but I think guilt is a good teacher. I try really hard not to let it get me down but to learn from it.
I am mostly just trying to curate what I like seeing and am interested in. I am trying to use the platform as a social media platform vs leaning into the complexities of stake and who owns what.
That being said, I appreciate your perspective and I think there are lots of different ways to HIVE. I will keep trying to learn and grow and be open to people like you that share honest and thoughtful feedback.

I was actually thinking about hive today too and made a post about it after I read a chapter called "Seek Wise Advice" in the commented version of The Richest Man of Babylon.
We are not perfect, you could check what other users that powered up a lot of hive are like and what they are doing, you can check their posts and read their thoughts in the current market. That was the insight I got from the quote from the original version:

Also the Price could be Up or Down, but if we still have nodes processing the transactions the functions of the chain will still happen as usual. Do you know if we lost any nodes in these lower prices? I don't think we lost any of the main witnesses.

BTC has been falling since 126K. In the past, it has even had much higher percentage drops compared to the peak of the bull run.
But I agree that Hive is undervalued, but in this context, it's difficult for it to appreciate. We all know that BTC's primary trend is bullish (I'm talking about the long-term trend), so it's just a matter of waiting for it to rise.
A day or two ago, I saw a Steem pump; it even reached 0.07, I think. With this, I want to show you that you can arbitrage and earn free crypto. Those who had liquid Steem could transform them into Hive without spending a penny.
I agree with this. But having more good in the world would be nice. 😅
I think the average cost to mine bitcoin now is around $60k so if it falls too far below that I think some of the miners will shut down that have to sell constantly. I doubt we will go too far below $60k if we do but honestly no one really knows.
That is interesting there is a way to arbitrage between Steem and HIVE. I don't really plan on buying Steem so I guess I am going to miss out on this one.
Also I do not really believe in true arbitrage but that is a discussion for a different day.
I'd just like to see Saylor and MicroStrategy in trouble.
We'll see how low BTC drops this time. I don't think this is the shortest bear market in crypto history.

Most of MSTR debt is no recourse so it would have to fall really low.
Deep down, I'm angry with ETFs because they tried to sell us BTC as digital gold, as if alternative cryptocurrencies were pure garbage. The reason we didn't have an alt season was because of ETF marketing.
I believe in Hive. I mentioned Steem only because I'm a bit frustrated with the network. I play Moonkarts, and this season I only managed to play one day. The game isn't working, and I don't see any answers to my questions. The bear market has just started, and they're already complaining about lowering project costs. Costs should always be lowered, not just when crypto prices fall.
But that's something we'll surely see in all blockchain projects.
I followed a bunch of bitcoiners on Twitter for a while. Most of them called alt coins shitcoins before the ETFs even came to be.
Also, they have other ETFs besides just Bitcoin ETFs. They have ETH ETFs and SOL ETFs.
The problem with the ETFs is people can’t really rotate into other things. Maybe that will change but I’m not going to get my hopes up anytime soon 😅
I’m ok with the digital gold comparison of bitcoin. Like it has a fixed supply and a really strong global network.
But also I just think being Maxi anything is a bad idea and things like Hive exist that have a lot of potential.
In the long term, the trend is bullish; that's the primary trend. Therefore, it would be a long-term safe haven.
The problem is that each new all-time high generates a pullback of up to 80%.
Imagine $126k; you buy, it corrects because the bear market begins, and if you sell, you lose a lot, or you wait for the price to recover in 3 or 4 years.

What does arbitration mean?
It is not arbitrage to play with the price movements of two cryptocurrencies
I understand now, I just looked into it; it's an interesting operation.
I think Binance is working against us.
Just look at these two cropped screenshots.
Is Binance working against us? No idea.
But I think that APY is some function of volatility. I think they pay that so people have Steem or Hive locked up and they can lend more to margin traders.
I can't quite grasp the underlying issue. But it seems very strange to me, especially considering the pump Steem created.
I would guess that pump is why the APY is so high. But I don’t watch Steem price so I have no idea what the APY is for it usually.

I always try to do good, and I also really want to boost Hive, but I can't right now. I think most people have done "evil" things in their life. Evil may be a strong word but I am just speaking my mind.
I think all humans are good and bad to some degree. I think babies are obviously not bad people lol but as babies grow and become adults they do make mistakes. These mistakes are what changes people.
If you think about it, all the bad people in the world were originally gentle adorable little babies. Something happened and life changed them.
I was raised with a strong foundation on the differences between good and evil. When I make mistakes in my life I still have a strong base to come back to. I would not say I have done something so bad I can't come back from it.
I would argue all people are good and bad people as they grow up. I have never met anyone in my life who has not done something wrong or immoral.
I have met people who regret the things they have done and they work to be better going forward. To me these are "good" people.
I believe I am a good person who has made mistakes.
Being so open has its advantages and disadvantages. It's good because you show your more human side, your mistakes and successes, and that makes you approachable and endearing. It's not so good because, as you said in your previous Hive post, everything is recorded forever. Or perhaps someone could use your honesty to hurt you. Personally, I think what you're doing is great because that's what Hive is for: to write about what we want, what we like, and what we enjoy.
Every time you say you're empowering yourself, it makes me believe even more that I'm in the right place, because many people here on Hive, like you, are doing the same. Not as many as you, but there are little ants empowering themselves, and I think that as long as there are users who stay and believe in Hive, we will be strong. Empower yourself as much as you want; stop worrying about what others will say. I know you're doing the best you can, and what's best for Hive benefits the community.

I've done bad things too, but not that bad, so I think I'm a good person. It's great that you can accumulate Hive; I see it as a balance because there are those of us who want to but can't.
And you can and you want to, and that's good and great for many.
Sometimes we do bad things out of ignorance or perhaps because we let ourselves be carried away by our emotions But recognizing our mistakes makes us good. Gotta be honest, when I spend so much time on a original vlog, but see 70% of those posting in your trad-fi community clearly using AI and nobody has a issue with them not even giving a source that they used AI to at least structure posts, it’s a bit deflating that I waste time doing original audio and see these AI posts get same support from you. @hurtlocker.
I noticed you asked a couple accounts to write if they used AI for cover image, but what about the obvious AI fingerprints on 70% plus of the writing & structure? Certainly would be easier for me to ask AI to help me with a blog instead of my much longer effort of doing vlogs. Wish there was at least a push to make them source they used AI. What’s point of spending hours on a no AI help vlog when if I ran some sloppy text though AI , I could finish posts like this in 15 minutes or less. Lame. Just being honest.
