Lawang Sewu historical building

Semarang city has many historical buildings built by the Dutch East Indies Government when they controlled Indonesia. Lawang building is one of the historical buildings built around 1904 completed in 1907.

Designer by the famous Dutch architects Jacob F.Klinkhamer and B.J.Oendaag. The shape and style of the Lawang Sewu building have a touch of tropical and classic European style. This building has become an icon of the city of Semarang because of its magnificent.


The Javanese call it Lawang Sewu because of its many doors. The air in Semarang city is quite hot, with the tropical concept used in the Lawang Sewu building it is quite understandable. The Lawang Sewu building used doors,windows that are quite large and hight.





As well as high ceiling to ensure good air circulation and a comfortable room. The Lawang Sewu building faces a roundabout, so the completion of the corner of the building facade with beautiful and unique building ornamentation art.


Connecting one building to another, connected by a corridors. Natural lighting is created with stained glass decorated with symbols of flora and fauna, natural resources. Which are placed on the main staircase, to illuminate the interior space.



The interior of this historic building is designer with beautiful ornaments and curved shaped.


Intially, the Lawang Sewu building was used as the central office of the railway company or Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatshappij. And currently the Lawang Sewu building is managed by the Indonesian Railway Company.
The well building is located in the front yard of the Lawang Sewu building which functions to protect the water source.

An old steam train monument, displayed next to the front yard as a witness to history.

Queue of visitors who Will enter the Lawang Sewu building by buying tickets, ticket prices for adults 20.000,- ($1,19) children 10.000,- ($0,59).
