The journey from a graduate into the workforce is never easy, even if you had an internship experience, the level of smoothness would be just as smooth as sandpaper.

Reason for me to say so is that, the workplace demands nowadays is growing exponentially. Just doing work alone is not enough. Demands such as event management, university outreach, managing employee relation groups and many others is now part of what a new hire is needed for their contribution to the company.

And often, some of these skills display ended being sold as attributes for promotion. So if one just focus on their main job, you will definitely lose out to those whom take part in such events and have direct access to the management and cross function visibility.

If you still think the workplace requirements is just simply doing your main job well, think again as things have really changed alot over the years. If you just keep to doing your main work well, your progression might be worse than going through sandpaper.
