La suerte del campeón (SPA-ENG)
Esta frase que se ha mencionado en un sinfín de oportunidades y se ha escuchado aún más veces, trata de explicar coloquialmente, principalmente en los deportes individuales y colectivos, el porqué de una victoria inesperada o quizás una derrota sin autocrítica, invitando a cuestionar la legitimidad y los merecimientos introduciendo la variable del azar.
En la noche del sábado pasado, Estudiantes de la Plata, equipo vecino y acérrimo contrincante por no decir enemigo de mi querido Lobo Platense, se coronó como campeón del torneo clausura del fútbol argentino al vencer por penales a Racing Club de Avellaneda luego de empatar en un tanto por bando con un gol agónico de los platenses en el descuento, que obligó a un alargue de otros 30 minutos donde la paridad no se rompió.
En un encuentro único de una final de campeonato puede ocurrir cualquier cosa y se dio un match peleado y trabado donde la paridad se debió resolver por la vía de los penales, una solución que probablemente no sea del todo justa, pero que es inevitable; al menos hasta ahora no se ha encontrado otra forma mejor para definir que equipo será campeón cuando no hay ventaja en el marcador.
Ganó Estudiantes de la Plata y para muchos resulta sorprendente, increíble y se especula con "la suerte del campeón" ante la falta de mejores argumentos para definir qué fue lo que ocurrió realmente.
Para explicar esto hay que retroceder hasta la última fecha de la etapa regular, donde se definían los 8 primeros lugares de cada zona que entrarían a los playoffs. Antes de jugarse esos últimos encuentros Estudiantes necesitaba un milagro para clasificar, en su zona había 3 equipos, si 3 y no solo uno, que podían dejarlo fuera de los 8 si cualquiera de ellos ganaba su partido, como un designio inesperado y hasta caprichoso del destino, ninguno de los 3 ganó y el equipo de La Plata pasó como 8vo. y último clasificado. Si eso no es suerte, sinceramente no sé cómo definirlo.
Pero la suerte (acompañada en algunos momentos por un buen juego) no finalizó allí, el equipo Pincharrata debía disputar el primer encuentro de los playoff ante el primero de la otra zona, Rosario Central, en el estadio Gigantes de Arroyito, sede del club donde milita Ángel Di María; en un escenario mucho más enrarecido de lo habitual, el equipo rosarino había sido nombrado en los escritorios, campeón de la temporada 2025 por ser el de mejor puntaje en todo el año, un título que ningún club integrante de la primera división del fútbol argentino sabía que existía ni que estaba disputando hasta el día anterior cuando el presidente de la AFA decidió esa locura cuyas consecuencias aún están por verse.
En el ingreso para disputar ese partido los jugadores de Estudiantes le dieron la espalda a los de Rosario Central cuando salieron al campo de juego en señal de desacuerdo por la medida, cuando la reglamentación vigente dice que el equipo rival debe hacer un "pasillo" en homenaje al campeón al salir a disputar el encuentro. Como castigo por semejante afrenta, más que a Central, al presidente de la AFA, se suspendió al presidente del equipo platense, el histórico Juan Sebastián Verón, por 6 meses y a los jugadores por 2 partidos, a cumplir en las primeras fechas del torneo siguiente.
Estudiantes ganó ese encuentro y siguió su marcha hasta coronarse campeón este sábado, no sin antes eliminar en semifinales y para mi desgracia, a mi querido Lobo en el clásico platense donde nuestros rivales fueron mejores sin duda.
Hubo mucha suerte en su ingreso a los playoffs, casi un milagro, pero luego a base de juego y carácter logró el título, pese a la AFA de Tapia que debió premiarlos muy a disgusto al ver que Estudiantes le hizo un "pasillo" al gallardo Racing Club de Avellaneda, en su ingreso a la premiación como subcampeón.
Los memes de burla a Tapia, Rosario Central y Ángel Di María no se hicieron esperar.
The champion's luck

On Saturday night, Estudiantes de La Plata, a neighboring team and fierce rival, not to say enemy, of my beloved Lobo Platense, was crowned champion of the Argentine football closing tournament by beating Racing Club de Avellaneda on penalties after a 1-1 draw with a last-minute goal from the Platense team in stoppage time, which forced an extra 30 minutes where the tie remained unbroken.
In a single-elimination championship final, anything can happen, and this was a hard-fought and tightly contested match where the tie had to be resolved by penalties, a solution that is probably not entirely fair, but unavoidable. At least until now, no better way has been found to determine the champion when there's no lead on the scoreboard.
Estudiantes de La Plata won, and for many, it's surprising, unbelievable, and there's speculation about "the champion's luck" due to the lack of better arguments to explain what really happened.
To explain this, we have to go back to the last matchday of the regular season, where the top eight teams in each zone that would qualify for the playoffs were decided. Before those final matches, Estudiantes needed a miracle to qualify. In their zone, there were three teams—yes, three, not just one—that could have knocked them out of the top eight if any of them won their game. As if by an unexpected twist of fate, none of the three won, and the La Plata team advanced as the eighth and final qualifying team. If that isn't luck, I honestly don't know what is.
But the luck (accompanied at times by some good play) didn't end there. Estudiantes was scheduled to play the first leg of the playoffs against Rosario Central, the top team from the other zone, at the Gigantes de Arroyito stadium, home of Ángel Di María's club. In a far more unusual atmosphere than usual, Rosario Central had been declared the 2025 season champion by default, having achieved the highest points total throughout the year—a title that no club in the Argentine first division knew existed or was even competing for until the day before, when the AFA president made this crazy decision, the consequences of which are still unfolding.
As they entered the field for the match, the Estudiantes players turned their backs on the Rosario Central players in protest against the decision, despite the current regulations stating that the opposing team must form a guard of honor for the champion before entering the pitch. As punishment for such an affront, the president of the La Plata team, the legendary Juan Sebastián Verón, was suspended for six months, and the players for two matches, to be served in the first rounds of the following tournament.
Estudiantes won that match and continued their run to become champions this Saturday, but not before eliminating my beloved Gimnasia in the semifinals, much to my dismay, in the La Plata derby, where our rivals were undoubtedly the better team.
They had a lot of luck getting into the playoffs, almost a miracle, but then, through skillful play and character, they secured the title, despite Tapia's AFA, which reluctantly had to award them the trophy after Estudiantes gave a guard of honor to the gallant Racing Club of Avellaneda as they entered the awards ceremony as runners-up.
