Baréin día 3 (SPA-ENG)
Las pruebas oficiales antes del lanzamiento de la nueva temporada llegan a su fin en el día de hoy , 3 últimos días que han confirmado en buena medida lo que comenzó a delinearse en la semana anterior, es decir, no hubo grandes sorpresas y los mismos equipos que se mostraron más fuertes el año anterior vuelven a dominar la categoría aunque quizás no en el mismo orden, lo veremos a lo largo de un año que será largo y espero mucho más apasionante que los anteriores.
Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari y Red Bull continúan destacando del resto de las escuderías que en esta temporada son 7, una más que hasta 2025, cuando el total de equipos participantes era de 10.
Lo que parece haber cambiado en esa zona alta es el orden en que se han visto los vehículos hasta el momento, Mercedes se ha mostrado un escalón por encima de los otros tres que se reparten esos puestos entre el segundo y el cuarto aleatoriamente. Ciertamente hay que tomar todos estos comentarios con reservas, como ya se ha dicho, son pruebas y todos esconden algunas de sus mejores cartas que recién saldrán a la luz cuando no quede otra opción que ponerlo todo.
En el día de ayer Ferrari sorprendió con un ala trasera que gira para abrirse totalmente, supuestamente aprovechando mejor la resistencia del aire para esas rectas donde la adherencia no es factor primordial, este capítulo de la aerodinamia activa ha incentivado la inventiva de algunos diseñadores, ya hemos visto que Alpine también tuvo un toque de creatividad al crear un alerón trasero que baja en vez de subir como en el resto del parque. Si esto hará una diferencia o si solo son fuegos artificiales es algo que aún no queda del todo claro.
Ya hablamos de los 4 equipos más fuertes, ¿qué pasa en la zona media? Bien, el que ha recuperado muchas posiciones ha sido Alpine que ayer mostró una muy buena imagen al ubicarse Colapinto en sexto lugar en la clasificación general por tiempos y en segundo lugar en cantidad de vueltas dadas, rapidez y confiabilidad que lo muestran como uno de los que mejor les ha caído el cambio generacional de vehículos haciendo olvidar hasta el momento lo mal que se ha visto la temporada anterior. Audi, Haas y Racing Bull y Williams se encuentran bastante parejos. En los últimos lugares sorpresivamente Aston Martin y Cadillac, éste quizás esperable, no así el equipo con sede en Silverstone cuyo propietario, el millonario Lawrence Stroll, no puede creer que luego de la enorme inversión realizada, tenga tantos inconvenientes. Muchos señalan la baja performance del motor Honda; sin embargo, parece que ese no es el único inconveniente.

Pero vayamos a lo que está ocurriendo hoy en la pista, en una mañana a la que resta poco para finalizar.
Se mantiene la tendencia de las 2 jornadas anteriores y también, si se quiere, de las 3 de la semana previa, primero se encuentra Leclerc con la Ferrari, segundo Antonelli con el Mercedes y tercero Piastri con el McLaren, Ocon, Hadjar y Gasly en las siguientes posiciones. Parecería que el francés, compañero de Max Verstappen, aún no encuentra el mismo ritmo de su coequiper y no puede hacer rendir de la mejor manera al Red Bull, vistas las condiciones de este excelente piloto, seguramente pronto se pondrá a la altura.
El Cadillac tiene tiempos horribles, muy lejos de cualquier otro, y el Aston Martin no ha visto acción y parece que se pierde toda la mañana.
Pocos minutos atrás hubo una bandera roja porque el Mercedes de Antonelli se paró en medio de la pista y hubo que retirarlo, preocupa un tanto que este inconveniente les haya pasado varias veces a lo largo de estas pruebas.
Al reanudarse las pruebas, se apura a salir Checo Pérez, que solo había podido girar unas 6 vueltas, ridículo comparado con otros pilotos que han superado las 60.
Esta tarde tendremos las últimas 4 horas de entrenamiento y es casi seguro que los tiempos mejorarán ya que la llegada del anochecer y la baja de la temperatura serán momentos propicios para intentar exigir un poco más a los vehículos.
Mañana haré un resumen general y estaremos un poco más cerca de saber qué nos deparará esa primera carrera de Australia dentro de tan solo un par de semanas.
Bahrain day 3
The official pre-season tests conclude today. These final three days have largely confirmed what began to emerge last week: no major surprises. The same teams that performed best last year are once again dominating the category, although perhaps not in the same order. We'll see how things develop over the course of what promises to be a long and, I hope, much more exciting year than previous ones.
Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull continue to stand out from the rest of the teams, which number seven this season, one more than the ten participating teams until 2025.
What seems to have changed at the top is the order in which the cars have performed so far. Mercedes has consistently been a step ahead of the other three, who are vying for second through fourth place. Certainly, all these comments should be taken with a grain of salt. As already mentioned, they are just tests, and everyone is holding back some of their best cards, which will only be revealed when there's no other option but to go all in.
Yesterday, Ferrari surprised everyone with a rear wing that rotates to fully open, supposedly making better use of air resistance on those straights where grip isn't the primary factor. This chapter in active aerodynamics has spurred the inventiveness of some designers. We've already seen that Alpine also had a touch of creativity by creating a rear wing that lowers instead of rising like the rest of the field. Whether this will make a difference or if it's just a smokescreen is still not entirely clear.
We've already talked about the four strongest teams, but what's happening in the midfield? Well, Alpine has recovered many positions, showing a very good image yesterday with Colapinto finishing sixth in the overall standings by time and second in the number of laps completed. Speed and reliability demonstrate that they are one of the teams that have best adapted to the generational change of vehicles, making everyone forget, for now, how poorly they performed last season. Audi, Haas, Racing Bull, and Williams are quite evenly matched. Surprisingly, Aston Martin and Cadillac are at the back of the pack. The latter was perhaps expected, but not so much the Silverstone-based team, whose owner, the millionaire Lawrence Stroll, can't believe that after the enormous investment made, they are experiencing so many problems. Many point to the poor performance of the Honda engine; however, it seems that this is not the only issue.
But let's get to what's happening on the track today, on a morning that is nearing its end.
The trend from the previous two days, and arguably the three days of the previous week, continues: Leclerc leads with the Ferrari, followed by Antonelli in the Mercedes, and Piastri in the McLaren. Ocon, Hadjar, and Gasly occupy the next positions. It seems the Frenchman, Max Verstappen's teammate, hasn't yet found the same pace as his teammate and can't get the best performance out of the Red Bull. Given the talent of this excellent driver, he'll surely catch up soon.
The Cadillac is posting terrible times, far behind everyone else, and the Aston Martin hasn't seen any action and appears to be missing the entire morning.
A few minutes ago, there was a red flag because Antonelli's Mercedes stalled in the middle of the track and had to be removed. It's somewhat worrying that this problem has happened to them several times during these tests.
When testing resumed, Sergio Pérez rushed out, having only managed about six laps—a paltry number compared to other drivers who had already completed over 60.
This afternoon, we'll have the final four hours of practice, and it's almost certain that times will improve, as the approaching nightfall and the drop in temperature will provide an ideal opportunity to push the cars a bit harder.
Tomorrow I'll give a general summary, and we'll be a little closer to knowing what the first race in Australia will hold in just a couple of weeks.
