Working on old technology always feels like a journey back in time. In this project, I decided to restore not just one, but two original Game Boys. Both came with their own problems and both told a different story of age, use and survival. One of them still powers on but suffers from an unreliable power connection. The other one turns on as well, but its display clearly shows signs of irreversible damage.
Taking them apart piece by piece revealed exactly what decades of use, storage and sometimes leaking batteries can do to electronics. Corrosion, oxidation and fragile plastic are not signs of failure. They are simply proof that these devices have lived a long life.
An alter Technik zu arbeiten fühlt sich immer ein wenig wie eine Zeitreise an. In diesem Projekt habe ich mich dazu entschieden, nicht nur einen, sondern gleich zwei originale Game Boys zu restaurieren. Beide hatten ihre ganz eigenen Probleme und beide erzählen eine andere Geschichte von Alter, Nutzung und Durchhaltevermögen. Einer startet noch, hat jedoch einen deutlichen Wackelkontakt bei der Stromversorgung. Der andere lässt sich ebenfalls einschalten, zeigt aber einen klaren Displayschaden.
Schon beim Zerlegen wurde deutlich, was Jahrzehnte an Nutzung, Lagerung und ausgelaufene Batterien mit Elektronik anstellen können. Korrosion, Oxidation und spröder Kunststoff sind kein Zeichen von Versagen. Sie sind lediglich der Beweis dafür, dass diese Geräte ein langes Leben hinter sich haben.
Power Issues and Corrosion
The first Game Boy shows a classic problem that many original DMG models suffer from. Power interruptions caused by corrosion and oxidation on the mainboard. Especially around the battery contacts and the power switch, time leaves its marks. These issues rarely mean that the device is beyond repair. In most cases, careful cleaning, checking solder joints and restoring proper electrical contact is enough to bring it back to stable operation.
Seeing the Nintendo logo appear again after cleaning and reworking parts of the power circuit is always a rewarding moment. It proves that these machines were built to last and can still be saved with patience and respect.

Wenn nach diesen Arbeiten das Nintendo Logo wieder erscheint, ist das immer ein besonderer Moment. Er zeigt, wie robust diese Geräte gebaut wurden und dass sie auch heute noch mit etwas Geduld und Sorgfalt gerettet werden können.
A Display That Has Seen Too Much
The second Game Boy tells a different story. The display shows missing lines, dark areas and discoloration. These are clear signs of internal damage to the LCD glass itself. Unlike contact issues, this kind of defect cannot realistically be repaired without replacing the entire display.
For me, this is the point where a decision has to be made. Preserve the original hardware as a parts donor or give the device a new future with a modern IPS display upgrade. Either way, the console is far from useless. Even a damaged Game Boy still has value, history and purpose.

In beiden Fällen ist der Game Boy keineswegs nutzlos. Selbst ein beschädigtes Gerät besitzt noch Wert, Geschichte und einen Zweck.
Retrobright – My First Attempt at Whitening a Game Boy Shell
Restoring the electronics is only one part of the journey. The yellowed plastic shell is often the most visible sign of age. For the first time, I decided to try whitening an original DMG front shell using the Retrobright method.
The shell was completely stripped beforehand. No buttons, no display frame, nothing that could react badly with hydrogen peroxide. I applied the solution carefully and placed the shell under a UV lamp. From this moment on, patience becomes essential. The reaction does not happen instantly. Time and light do most of the work.
At first, nothing seems to change. That can be unsettling, especially during a first attempt. Slowly, over several hours, the yellow tint begins to fade and the original color returns. The goal is not to make the shell look brand new, but to restore its original appearance while keeping its age and character intact.

This restoration is not finished yet. Some things still need time, some decisions are still open. But that is part of the journey. What matters most is that these Game Boys are no longer forgotten. They are being touched, repaired, respected and given attention once again.
And maybe that is what restoration is really about. Not perfection, not speed, not trends. Just taking the time to care.
