Ja, ich fahre ein E-Auto. Aber lass dir gesagt sein: Mein Herz schlägt immer noch im Takt eines Verbrenners.
Yes, I drive an electric car. But believe me, my heart still beats in sync with a combustion engine.

Manche Menschen parken ihren Wagen einfach. Ich parke Erinnerungen. Unser Smart ist 24 Jahre alt, kein Alltagsauto mehr, sondern ein rollendes Hobby. Er braucht Pflege, Aufmerksamkeit und ja, manchmal auch Nerven. Aber genau darum lieben wir ihn. Und genau deswegen stehen wir auf Treffen zwischen poliertem Chrom, knalligem Lack und vielen „Ach schau mal, so einen hatte mein Vater auch!“
Some people just park their car. I park memories. Our Smart is 24 years old, no longer a daily driver, but a rolling hobby. He needs care, patience, and yes, sometimes nerves. But that’s exactly why we love him. And that’s exactly why we attend car meets full of polished chrome, bright paint jobs, and lots of comments like “Hey, my dad used to have one of those!”

A Time Machine in 10 Photos

Ein Wartburg, flach wie ein Brett, Felgen wie aus einem Custom-Katalog. Früher mal Volkseigentum, heute rollendes Kunstwerk. Wer hätte gedacht, dass man aus einem DDR-Klassiker so einen Showstopper bauen kann? Der Beweis steht hier. Ich selbst hatte mal einen. Kein Raser, eher ein Gemütlicher, aber: robust bis zum Letzten. Selbst mit kaputter Kupplung konnte ich fahren! Dank des voll synchronisierten Getriebes reichte Zwischengas, und er rollte weiter, langsam, aber sicher.

A Wartburg, flat as a board, wheels straight out of a custom catalog. Once people’s property, now a rolling piece of art. Who would've thought a GDR classic could be turned into such a showstopper? Here's the proof. I owned one myself. Not a speedster, more like a cruiser, but tough as nails. Even with a broken clutch, it still moved! Thanks to the fully synchronized gearbox, a bit of rev-matching and off you went, slow but steady.

Golf 1 GTI. Schwarz. Breit. Bissig. In den 80ern fuhr man damit der Jugend hinterher, heute fährt man ihn zur Legende. Wer hat nicht von einem Golf 1 geträumt? Na gut, Opel-Fans vielleicht nicht. Aber mir war die Marke egal. Ich wollte einfach genau so einen rote Linie im Grill, bissiger Sound, leicht wie ein Kart. Ich kam ihm nie wirklich nahe. Immer fehlte das letzte bisschen Geld. Aber träumen durfte man ja.

Golf Mk1 GTI. Black. Wide. Aggressive. In the 80s, you chased the cool kids with it, today, you drive it into legend. Who didn’t dream of owning a Golf 1? Okay, maybe not the Opel fans. But I never cared about the brand. I just wanted one red line in the grille, angry engine sound, light as a go-kart. I never got close. Always just a few coins short. But dreams? Dreams were free.

Und dann dieselbe Basis, ganz anderer Ton. Hellblau, golden, offen. Wenn ein Auto "Sommerliebe" ruft, dann dieser.
And then same base, totally different tune. Light blue, golden rims, open top. If any car screams “summer love,” this is it.

Der Audi 100 Typ 43. Früher stand er in jeder Seitenstraße, heute ist er seltener als viele Exoten. Seine kantige Eleganz hat etwas Ehrliches, Solides.

Und dann der Typ 44, futuristisch für seine Zeit. Flach, windschnittig, mit mehr Platz als so mancher SUV heute. Unser Freund hatte mal einen. Wir sind oft gemütlich mitgefahren leise, bequem, irgendwie souverän. Das war kein Angeberauto, sondern eins für die, die wussten, was sie wollten.

And then the Type 44, futuristic for its time. Low, aerodynamic, and roomier than many modern SUVs. A friend of ours once had one. We rode along in it often quiet, comfy, somehow commanding. It wasn’t a show-off car, but one for those who knew what they wanted.

Der W123. Wenn der Begriff „deutsche Wertarbeit“ ein Auto wäre, dann genau dieses. Klare Kanten, edles Blech, ein Auto wie ein Versprechen. Aber ist er wirklich so original, wie er aussieht? Von außen, keine Frage. Doch unter der Haube? Der Besitzer war leider nicht da. Ich hätte zu gern mal unter die Motorhaube geschaut. Denn irgendetwas an diesem Wagen sagte mir: Das hier ist kein Opa-Auto. Das hier könnte eine ganz böse Überraschung bereithalten, wenn du denkst, du fährst gegen einen gemütlichen Diesel.

The W123. If “German engineering” were a car, this would be it. Clean lines, solid sheet metal, a car like a handshake. But is it really as original as it looks? On the outside no doubt. But under the hood? Sadly, the owner wasn’t around. I would’ve loved to peek under the hood. Because something about this car whispered: This isn’t your grandpa’s ride. This one might bite if you dare to challenge it.

Golf III im Neonkleid. Früher Jugendauto, heute Eyecatcher mit Spoilern, Schwellern und Ringen, die auch am Nürburgring nicht fehl am Platz wären. Ich hab übrigens auf genau so einem Modell Fahrschule gemacht. Na ja, nicht ganz so auffällig. Das hier ist ein echtes Kind der 90er-Tuning-Ära. Bei einem Benzingespräch mit dem Besitzer hat er mir erzählt, dass er den Wagen demnächst komplett zerlegen und neu aufbauen will aber der Stil soll bleiben. Ehrlich gesagt: Ich bin gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen.

Golf Mk3 in neon. Once a learner’s car, now a full-on show piece with spoilers and rings, Nürburgring vibes included. Fun fact I learned to drive in a Golf 3 too. Well… not quite like this one. This is pure 90s tuning at its finest. The owner told me in a petrol-fueled chat that he's planning a full rebuild soon, but the style will stay. Honestly? I can’t wait to see it.

Bruno – der Golf mit Namen. Dezent. Ehrlich. Und ein paar schicke Felgen, die jedem Originalfahrer ein anerkennendes Nicken entlocken. Komisch, oder? Ein Auto mit Namen. Aber Hand aufs Herz, habt ihr euer Auto nicht auch irgendwie getauft? Bei uns gehörte das einfach dazu. Bruno gehört übrigens nicht zum Golf II wie man auf den ersten Blick denken könnte, sondern zum knallgrünen Golf III. Der Name passt irgendwie. Und wenn man ihn sieht, weiß man: Das ist kein anonymes Fortbewegungsmittel, das ist ein Charakter.

For us, it was just part of the bond. By the way, Bruno isn't a Golf Mk2 – as it may seem but actually the bright green Golf Mk3 from earlier. And somehow, the name fits. When you see him, you know: this isn’t just transport – this is personality on wheels.

📝 Vielfalt mit Überraschungseffekt

Variety With a Hidden Kick

Was mich an solchen Treffen so begeistert, ist die Vielfalt. Der eine restauriert akribisch auf Werkszustand, der nächste fährt seine Karre mit Beulen stolz durch den Alltag. Und beide haben meinen Respekt. Und dann sind da die stillen Jäger sogenannte Sleeper. Du schaust dir ein unscheinbares Auto an, denkst „okay, nix Besonderes“, und dann brüllt dich beim Gasgeben ein Monster aus dem Motorraum an. Manche wirken wie Rentnerautos, grauer Lack, Serienfelgen. Aber innen: getunte Turbos, große Lader, Rennkupplung. Wölfe im Schafspelz genau solche Begegnungen machen jedes Treffen spannend.

What excites me at these meets is the variety. One restores with factory perfection, the next drives around proudly with dents. And both earn my respect. And then there are the silent hunters so-called sleepers. You look at a plain car, think “nothing special,” and then a beast roars from under the hood when it takes off. Some look like grandma’s ride – dull paint, stock wheels. But inside: tuned turbos, massive injectors, race clutch. Wolves in sheep’s clothing and that’s what makes these meets so thrilling.

And our Smart? A Youngtimer With Flaws and Charm

Mit seinen 24 Jahren gehört er zwar noch nicht offiziell zur Oldtimer-Riege, aber unter echten Schraubern ist er längst akzeptiert. Auch wenn der Kleine oft belächelt wird, sagt doch fast jeder: „Den hatte mal jemand in der Familie.“ Oder: „Ich wusste gar nicht, dass man den so lange fahren kann!“ Ja, er hatte seine Macken. Der Motor war nie für die Ewigkeit gebaut, und auch das Getriebe war eher eine Wundertüte. Aber genau das macht ihn heute zu etwas Besonderem. Und jedes Mal, wenn ihn jemand anerkennend betrachtet, weiß ich: Benzin im Blut rostet nicht.

At 24 years old, he may not be a certified classic, but among real car folks, he’s earned his place. Even though he's often smiled at, almost everyone says: “Someone in my family had one of those.” Or: “Didn’t know you could keep those running this long!” Yes, he had his quirks. The engine wasn’t built for eternity, and the transmission was more of a gamble. But that’s exactly what makes him special today. And every time someone nods at him with respect, I know: petrol doesn’t rust.
