I had waited a long time for this crossing. There are only two ways to set foot on Vilm: either as a participant in a seminar at the International Academy for Nature Conservation or as part of an officially guided tour. Vilm’s history reaches back more than ten thousand years. Formed after the Ice Age from glacial moraines, the island was already inhabited during the Stone Age, as archaeological finds and a remaining megalithic grave show. For the Slavs, Vilm was a sacred place, and by the year 1000 it was known to the Vikings, perhaps even the site of the legendary Battle of Svoldr.
The first written record dates back to 1249 when the island belonged to the noble House of Putbus. In the Middle Ages, a small chapel and hermitage stood here, serving as a place of pilgrimage and care. After the Reformation, the chapel disappeared, and the island was later used for farming and forestry.
In the 19th century, Vilm became a romantic destination for artists and travelers, often called the “Capri of the North.” During the GDR period, it was turned into a quiet retreat for the Council of Ministers. Since 1990, it has been part of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve, a protected gem where nature and history meet in peaceful balance.

Our guide led us carefully along narrow trails, reminding us that every step here is part of a fragile ecosystem. Paths are limited, and visitors are asked to stay within marked areas so that the ancient forest remains untouched. Along the way, we discovered small traces of human presence, an old guiding beacon, rusted but still standing, a reminder that even here, where nature reigns, history left its marks.
At the end of the walk, the view opened to the steep coast, bright sand against deep blue water, framed by branches that have witnessed centuries of storms. It was a moment of stillness that made everyone pause. Vilm does not overwhelm with size or grandeur. Its beauty lies in its humility, in the realization that true preservation means restraint.
