Dreaming in Yellow – A Short School Bus, a Long Road

Er stand da im Gras wie ein Relikt aus einer anderen Welt. Ein leuchtend gelber amerikanischer Schulbus, kurz in der Form, aber voller Abenteuer.

It stood there in the grass like a relic from another world. A bright yellow American school bus, compact in size, yet packed with adventure.

Wir entdeckten ihn auf einem Oldtimertreffen, und irgendetwas an ihm zog sofort unseren Blick auf sich. Kein aufpoliertes Ausstellungsstück, kein Sammlerstück unter Glas, sondern ein Fahrzeug mit Seele. Ein Bus, der schon viele Leben hinter sich hatte. Das spürte man in jeder Delle, in jedem Aufkleber und in jeder kleinen Modifikation. In jedem Detail steckte eine Geschichte.

We spotted it at a classic vehicle meet, and something about it immediately caught our eye. Not a polished showpiece, not a collector’s item under glass, but a vehicle with a soul. A bus that had already lived many lives. You could feel it in the dents, the stickers and the modifications. There was a story in every detail.

Converted into a camper, road-ready and carrying the spirit of freedom, it stood there as if it was waiting for the next chapter.

Wir konnten ihn nicht einfach nur aus der Ferne bewundern. Also kamen wir mit den Besitzern ins Gespräch. Zwei bodenständige Menschen mit strahlenden Augen und staubigen Händen. Sie erzählten, wie sie den Bus in den USA entdeckt und beschlossen hatten, ihn nach Deutschland zu holen, nicht als Ausstellungsstück, sondern als Traum zum Leben und Selberbauen. Den Umbau haben sie komplett selbst gemacht, Schritt für Schritt, über viele Monate hinweg.

We couldn’t just admire it from afar. So we started chatting with the owners. Two down-to-earth people with radiant smiles and dusty hands. They told us how they had discovered the bus in the U.S. and decided to bring it home, not on a trailer but as a dream to be lived and built. The conversion was done entirely by themselves, step by step, over months.

Die größte Hürde war die Straßenzulassung in Deutschland. Das ursprüngliche Gewicht überschritt die Grenzen des alten Führerscheins Klasse 3 (heute B alt). Also mussten sie ihn auf 7,4 Tonnen ablasten. Das erforderte technisches Geschick, viel Papierkram und vor allem Geduld, besonders mit der deutschen Bürokratie.

The biggest hurdle was getting it street-legal in Germany. The original weight exceeded the limits of a regular old driver’s license (class 3, now B alt). So they had to reduce the weight to 7.4 tons. That required technical ingenuity, paperwork and patience, especially with German bureaucracy.

Während ich den Bus von allen Seiten fotografierte, wurden meine Frau und ich still. Du kennst diese Art von Stille, wenn beide dasselbe denken? Diese leise Stimme, die flüstert: Was wäre, wenn wir das wären? Wenn das unser Bus wäre, unsere Freiheit auf Rädern? Wenn wir einfach losführen, nicht um zu fliehen, sondern um irgendwo neu anzukommen.

As I took photos from all angles, my wife and I got quiet. You know that kind of silence when both are thinking the same thing? That little voice that whispers: What if it were us? What if this was our bus, our freedom on wheels? What if we just drove away, not to escape but to arrive somewhere new.

Wir haben beide noch den alten Führerschein. Rein rechtlich könnten wir so ein Fahrzeug fahren. Der Gedanke ist nicht absurd. Aber dann kommt die Realität: Wo sollen wir ihn unterstellen? Wir haben keine Halle, keine Werkstatt, keine Hebebühne, keine Werkzeuge, keinen Platz. Noch nicht.

We still have our old driver’s licenses, both of us. Legally, we could drive such a vehicle. The idea isn’t absurd. But then reality sets in: where would we store it? We don’t have a hall or a workshop. No hoist, no tools, no space. Not yet.

Aber der Traum lebt jetzt. Und allein das verändert etwas.

But the dream is alive now. And that alone changes something.

Seit diesem Tag sprechen wir oft darüber. Manchmal scherzhaft, manchmal ernst. Manchmal mit einer Karte in der Hand, auf der wir imaginäre Routen nachfahren. Manchmal einfach auf dem Balkon, während wir den vorbeiziehenden Wolken zusehen. Wir stellen uns vor, wie wir an einem norwegischen Fjord aufwachen oder unter den roten Felsen von Utah oder am Waldrand in Slowenien, und das alles aus dem Inneren eines gelben Busses heraus.

Since that day, we often talk about it. Sometimes joking, sometimes seriously. Sometimes with a map in hand, tracing imaginary routes. Sometimes just while sitting on the balcony, watching clouds drift by. We imagine waking up by a fjord in Norway, or beneath the red rocks of Utah, or at the edge of a forest in Slovenia, all from the inside of a yellow bus.

Es ist keine Frage des Geldes. Es ist eine Frage der Möglichkeiten und des Mutes.

It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of possibility and of courage.
