WORK LIFE CHOICES

Some days ago I watched a movie where a lady was all proud about the fact that she was a career woman and she could provide just anything herself and her daughter wanted. She would usually rub it on the faces of those that are not like her while advising them to be like her. Well, due to the fact that she was a career woman and was so interested in settling just the bills, she didn’t have any good time to carry out her duty as a parent which normally should have come first. In the end, her daughter ended up in a big mess and it was only then she saw the need for a change.

Just like that woman, there are a lot of us that are so interested in making money. We are privileged to have a good paying job but over time, we neglect the other important things. It scares us to the bones what it will be like if we can’t provide the most basic things for ourselves and those who are under our care and because of that, we neglect every other thing and solely pursue making money, thinking that a time will come when we will have all the time for the other things.

Personally, I have also been in this place before. I was working a job and it was hard to find time for those in my life at that point and I got a lot of comments like I’m not a good friend and all. Back then, I was sad that they didn’t just want to see things from my own perspective but I never blamed them.

Some jobs are really demanding of our time and knowing fully well that we have other things by that needs our attention too, we still had to choose that job because we know that people will still be the first to complain when we can’t provide for ourselves. This time will always come for everyone who is of age and has a job. One thing I know is, no job is permanent for me. Anything can happen and that job will be gone or I might be lucky to land myself a better job. Having this in mind, it helps me set my priorities right.

Of course, I need the money and that’s something my job is giving me while it takes the other parts of my life away. This alone will give me the hint that that kind of job is not the best for me. Besides that is not the only job that there is. There are so many other job opportunities but most times we are so desperate and sometimes scared of losing a job we have worked so hard to get and that makes us just bend to the will of working any job as long as it pays the bills.

Sometimes I feel we only think about our dignity when we are privileged to different opportunities so I can’t really say or try to judge why others are not selective of the jobs they do just because they have bills to pay. I’ll just pray that God helps us to be in a position when we won’t have to compromise our standards just because we need a job desperately. And this is why I always keep telling myself one thing, “Hope be useful no matter what.” No body wants anything to do with someone that is only a liability to them. They might hold on for a while but in the end you will be dished out once you are found completely useless to them. But the moment we are useful to people, when we need our time, they will be able to respect that as long as we do our jobs right.

We both live to work and work to live. But that doesn’t mean we should accept every job or do all the kind of jobs in that comes our way even when it requires us to do things that we know we shouldn’t do.
