WILDLIFE IN CHAINS

This morning, I woke up and did not feel like doing anything at all. I have been down for a while now and things have just been still. I rested all day and when I woke up this evening I decided that I have to do the needful, so I picked up my phone to write. The Hive learners’ community asks us to share our thoughts on zoos and wildlife recreational parks. Do you think that wild animals in zoo are being exploited for human entertainment? Human beings are on the top of the food chain. God placed them in control over the animals, but sometimes, they misuse this power. One thing I have realized about human beings is that they struggle with what is right and what is wrong. Human beings are the most difficult creatures to control because when they do the wrong things, as long as nobody is there to stop them, they will continue to do it.

One of the ways organizations or private businesses generate income is through zoos and wildlife recreational parks. Naturally, lions, zebras, tigers and other wild animals belong to the wild. They are called “wild” animals, and naturally, they should be in the forest, far away from human beings. The forest is their natural habitat, but because human beings want to use them for entertainment purposes, they capture them and place them in cages, far away from their natural habitat, so other people can come and pay a fee to watch them. The question is that is this right or wrong? Is it right that human beings capture wild animals and put them in cages for entertainment? If some animals are allowed to run free in the wild, they might not live as long, so is it better to lock them up in cages?

DO YOU THINK THAT WILD ANIMALS ARE BEING EXPLOITED FOR HUMAN ENTERTAINMENT?

As I mentioned, wild animals belong in the wild. They perform and reproduce better in their natural habitat and when they are taken out of their natural habitat and locked in cages, they are unable to fulfil that function. It is like their life system reduces once they are taken out of their natural habitat. Gradually, they start to die and eventually, they go into extinction. Some zoos are also not well funded. When zoos don’t have enough resources to feed animals, they let them starve. I am not sure how it works, but I know it takes a lot to feed lions and other wild animals. Humans, especially the greedy ones, only care about making money. Some of them don’t care about the health of the animals. As long as money is coming in, they are good to go. They let the animals go days without eating. They starve them till they become really tiny. There are many zoos out there that use animals strictly for entertainment without caring about their health.

WOULD THEY BE BETTER OFF IN THE WILD?

If some wild animals are left in the wild, they might not last days. For example, a zebra might get hunted by a lion, but that is the way things should be. That is how the wild works. Wild animals would be better off in their natural habitat. Yes, they would be free and also reproduce however they want.

IS THERE A WAY THAT PUTTING WILD ANIMALS IN CAGES WILL EVER BE A GOOD THING?

As I mentioned, humans struggle to know what is right and what is wrong. Zoos and wildlife recreational parks is not a new thing. Organizations won’t stop capturing animals and locking them in captivity, but what can be done is to take good care of the animals. At least that is better than locking them in cages and not feeding them.
