MY FIRST KNITTING PROJECT

I have always thought crocheting and knitting were the same thing. I mean, I thought crocheting was a refined way of saying knitting until I started learning about the skills. While applying for it, I chose crocheting as the skill I wanted but I later realized they were going to teach us how to knit and also crochet. It was my first time seeing a knitting machine. It looked abandoned at first but I later found it interesting when our coach started teaching us how it works.

The machine is called the brother machine. The brother machine is a manual machine that is used for knitting. It has different components to facilitate its efficiency. There are selecters, hangers, picker, row counters, tension spring, carriage, tension guide and so much more. All of these things have their different functions that come in handy at different stages of knitting a project.

We usually have our classes twice in a week and unfortunately for me, I always have other classes clashing with that time. Anyways, I try to meet up since the workshop is always open until 4pm. So today being Tuesday, we had a class and despite my other classes and the distance, I was able to still go for the knitting/crocheting class because I have missed a lot. When I got there, I found two girls learning how to make an adult hair band. Luckily for me, they just started so I joined them. We took turns in the process just to make sure we all were learning.

The first step was to fix the thread which they did before I got there. The next step was to select the pins that were needed for an adult head band (we used 60/60). After selecting the pins, we proceeded to using tension 8 and knitted 60 rows by dragging the carriage left and right over the chosen pins. After pushing the carriage the first time, we used the hanger to secure the knitted pieces to keep it straight. Immediately we got to the desired level we wanted, we folded it to form a brim and then knitted 2-3 times to secure the knit and cast off.

After we removed it from the machine, we used a needle threaded with a wool to pick the top of every last wool of what we knitted so it doesn’t loose. When we were done, we then folded it to form a knot kinda and then sewed it together before turning it to the right side.

This is the final result of what we made today. The knitting part of this looks fun but since we need a machine for it, I feel a bit discouraged but I’m just going to keep learning it anyways. Hopefully I’ll be able to get the machine later in the future.

I plan to focus more on hand crocheting because it is easier to master since I don’t need any machine for it. I tried it the other class I attended and I’m happy I made a little progress. The plan was to make scrunchies but I couldn’t finish it. It is impossible to learn everything in these classes so my plan is to practice on my own so I plan on getting some of the things I’ll be needing after my exams, while getting the basic knowledge of how to go about it from the classes.

Thanks for reading through. ❤️
