LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Over the years, there has always been one thing that was expected of every child the moment they return back from school and that is if they were given homework. If an adult was to ask a child how was their day at school, most times the next question that follows is, were you given any homework and have you done it? It was really common during the time I was in primary and even in secondary school. But the moment I got to tertiary School, everything changed.

Back then, giving pupils/students homework was a way of getting them to understand the need to study at home, on their own and not just when they are in school. It was a way of building them to cultivate the spirit of studying as well as solving problems on their own based on what they have learnt. For some, those homework was also a very good way to prove to their parents that they are not spending their money in vain. Seeing their children engage in school work even at home brings them the satisfaction that their children are learning.

In my time, I loved homework (of course, not all the time) because it was one of the ways I can avoid doing some extra work at home like staying at the shop attending to customers or even going to the market to get some items needed. I lived with my aunt and she will most times give preference to those who have homework to do. She was a teacher so she doesn’t joke with it too. Those homework also help me study and understand more efficiently because if it gets too hard, I can meet those that are above me to teach me and when they do, I most times understand it better. The truth is, without some homework that I have been given, I doubt I would have been able to comprehend some topics that were taught better.

For today’s Hivelearners topic, we are asked to share our thoughts on ”NO MORE HOMEWORK”. We were asked a few questions which I’ll quickly give my response to. So without further ado, let’s hear my thoughts and responses to these questions.

Would it be okay if kids in school were no longer given homework?

It won’t be okay if this happens. Except it would be replaced with something more helpful to help students do better in their academics. Back then, at some point, I really felt like some assignments given were after my life but now, I understand it better. These days, most students see homework as not necessary but then, they will only appreciate it better when they have exams or even tests. So, taking away homework from school activities won’t be okay at all.

Will this be a great idea? Or will it only ruin the system that has worked for so long?

This won’t be a great idea in anyway as far as I can think of. Homework are necessary for every child except of course some that are gifted and thinks it isn’t important, to do better in their academics. Giving homework to children will keep them engaged and also make them anticipate for what is to come next. It even helps them read ahead of the next class and when they are being taught on that topic, it helps them comprehend better. So taking it away, for me, it will ruin the whole idea of learning. We all know that once we stop learning for a while, it doesn’t help us do better but the more we learn, the better we understand.

Thanks for reading through. ❤️

Homework is so important in school, especially for kids who don't love reading, as assignments would make them refer back to their previous lessons.

You’re right. Although I blame some teachers for abusing it because it has made more persons hate it than appreciate it.

Cheers to us who used homework as an excuse not to do work at home😂😂
Homeworks are just necessary for learning. I can't even imagine taking them out of the learning process. So what? You come back from school and the next time you open your school bag is the next day at school. Nah to ah to the no no no.

Where is the fun in that? It’s just best to always have something to test my knowledge on what I have learnt.

Thanks for stopping, Charley. 🥰

Homeworks are very important in educating a child because it helps alot when a child go back home and seat down to revise and engage their selves in academics again

Taking homework out of the educational system will not be a good decision at all because it will make the child less motivated

Yeah. We always appreciate it at the tail end. When it is giving the children feel very bad and don't want to do it, but when they grow up, it becomes clearer to them.
Thanks for sharing
