Creative nonfiction #60 // How I escaped being arrested
I woke up on a Saturday morning sweating profusely and looking so scared. I knew I had a dream but I couldn't recall what the dream was all about.
I overlooked it and believed that everything would be okay.
I prayed and headed to the gym, I was at the gym when my mum called, she said I should leave whatever I was doing and come right way.
While I was standing before her, she looked at me for about ten seconds and said, "My dear holler I had a terrible dream about you.
I was a bit scared and asked "What was the dream all about ma"? She replied and said, I was hand-cuffed due to a robbery incident I know nothing about.
She then instructed me that for now, I should shun the act of moving around with my rugged friends and make sure I stopped walking at night.
I went back to the gym but I could not continue with my exercise because my mum's dream is always one hundred percent accurate(100%) and due to this fact, I was scared the more.
After her dream, she told me to spend more of my time indoors to avoid hanging around with friends who could mislead me.
June 17th, 1998 armed robbers invaded my community, there were lots of gunshots, and the robbery incident was involved.
Half of the houses in the area were robbed and my house was not robbed may be because luck was on our side.
Dr. Mrs Funmi, a principal in a Government secondary school whose daughter just come back from abroad was the primary target.
Her family was robbed and the robber
Made away with lots of valuable items.
Dr.Mrs Funmi went to the police station to report the robbery case and the policemen promised to bring the robbers to justice.
A few days after the robbery incident, I went on a stroll with a friend since it's been a while since I had a stroll.
So on our way back, we saw these two guys running away from Dr Mrs. Funmi's house and they were running in our direction, I and my friend quickly stepped aside for the guys and they ran away.
After some minutes while I was at home, the news broke out that I was the one who led the armed robber to my community and before I knew was what happening, the whole community was looking for me including fully armed policemen.
While the community chiefs were interrogating the policeman about the intel they gathered before carrying out the arrest, an officer said it was Dr Mrs. Funmi who identified me to be the gang leader.
The policemen had already arrested about seven guys in my community, they were waiting for me to complete the arrest.
I was at home when we heard a noise and on getting outside to know why there was so much noise, I Was apprehended and handcuffed immediately.
The issue became so involved that ninety-five percent of the community chiefs kept insinuating that I can not be a robber and when everybody kept saying the same thing about me, the policeman who led the team was amazed, convinced, and concluded that, if all the chiefs and community leaders keep providing good information about holla, that shows that we have just arrested the wrong person.
I was freed and that was how "I escaped being arrested".

Your mother's dream came to pass after all. Thank God you were not arrested, that is why it is good to live right. If only you were doing bad things, the elders in your community wouldn't have testified for you. Keep being you.
My mum's dream is always 100% accurate and at the same time it pays to be good.

hello @holler please could you correct your image sourcing on both copies of the image used and then your piece will be considered for curation. Thank you. The Ink Well team.
I have edited and put in the correct image sourcing @theinkwell. Thank you.
What a crazy story @holler and what a horrible experience to have to live through! You are very fortunate that you had a lot of support from senior members of your community to vouch for your good character.
Your piece could have done with more dialogue to drive the narrative forward. More show than tell would have elevated your story. We needed to see more story development too. Why did Dr Mrs. Funmi believe you to be the ringleader? What exactly did the community leaders say about your character that convinced the police to release you? Share more of the emotion behind your story in order to draw your reader in and make them relate more to the characters involved so that they have a vested interest in the outcome.
Thank you for sharing a story from your life with The Ink Well.
Thank you for your feedback, all corrections are duly noted.
I will work much better to improve my writing ability.
People tends to find a scapegoat during incidents like this, Mrs funmi must have have some reasons to believe you were part of the robbers probably because your house was not robbed or because of the kind of friends you roll with.
I'm glad that your innocence was proven.

Their prayers are always with us.
That was a narrow escape. I'm glad your stellar reputation helped you in this situation. Its truly terrible the number of people that get accused falsely in the world. Glad you're okay.
