If I Were Given $19,000 to Spend for a Week: A Balance of Personal and Societal Use
Minimalistic spending was one the things I learned from my parents. One who is raised by a civil service parent will understand what it means to use 50,000 naira to run the home affairs without being indebted to anyone; this was the home I was raised from. So, being privileged to be receive $19,000 (approximately 30 million naira) to spend in just a week will be a life-changing experience to me. Having such an amount of money in my bank will make me spend responsibly like my parents do. With such money I would do my best meet my personal needs and the basic societal needs. Striking this balance will make me valuable in the society and seem more responsible as compared to my initial status. Here, I will outline how I would distribute the funds to affect both my personal financial growth and contribute positively to my community.
For Personal Use:
As the beneficiary, it is unfair to treat others better than how I should treat myself. Meaning, with the 30 million naira, I would allocate 60% of the funds for personal use. This allocation is not lavish spending, categorically, I will use it to do the following:
- Buying of landed properties
- Buying of shares
- Buying some foodstuffs and provisions
- Buying of crypto assets
Buying of Landed Properties:
In Nigeria, one of the oil well businesses to venture into is the real estate business. As one who understands this trend, I would invest about 6 million naira in buying landed properties which would provide a steady source of passive income in the future. When I purchase these landed properties, I would venture into agricultural business before selling off the property in future. A few of the agricultural business would be planting of waterleaf, cassava, okro and other vegetables that are highly demanding in my locality.
Buying of shares:
Investing in shares is one of the business ideas I got from my uncle; though it takes some years to appreciate, but it is worth investing in it. So, I would invest like 3 million naira in shares like Facebook , Amazon, Tesla, etc; looking at their prospects I believe it will appreciate with the hope of diversifying my portfolio and potentially earning dividends.
Buying some foodstuffs and provisions:
It's commonly said "health is wealth," and I cannot stay healthy if I don't eat healthy meals. So I invest in my foodstuffs and provisions that would sustain for some months which would be about 3 million naira.
Buying of crypto assets:
I am glad I got to know about $HIVE some years back and currently I noticed the token has started appreciating. As part of my financial plan, I would invest about 5 million naira in crypto assets, especially Hive and its second layered tokens since it has significant growth potential in recent months.
For Societal Use:
After successfully allocating 60% of the funds for my personal use, I will use the remaining 40% of the funds, which is about 12 million naira for societal use. As one who was raised in the village I see there is a need to meet basic societal problems, so this amount would be allocated towards various initiatives such as:
- Gifting to the homeless and disabled,
- Gifting to family members,
- Provision of basic amenity like borehole, and
- Empowering some youths in the village.
As seen on the list above, I would gift about 2 million naira to the homeless and disabled in my community, some of the homeless people can as the result of natural disaster like flood, fire outbreak, etc and the government seem not to hear from them, so these are the crucial people (including the disabled) I will be providing for with basic necessities and dignity.
Fundamentally, my family members are the number one (#1) to take care of. They have been supportive and loving, aside from them enjoying my personal allocations too, I would gift about 3 million naira separately to them to show my appreciation for their love and care.
In my village, water and toilet are the major needs to be met; so, allocating about 3 million naira in providing these basic amenities to my community would create an impact on the health and well-being of the community. When the villagers have a clean drinking water and place to ease themselves, the community will be clean and healthy.
Finally, in my locality, I would empower some youths in the village by allocating about 4 million towards their education and skill development like driving tricycle, barbing, sewing clothes, etc. This investment would enable them to acquire skills, start businesses, and improve their socio-economic wellbeing.
