Mama's Secret Ingredient
The first time meeting with my mother in law was one of the most memorable moments of my life, even though the 12 hour road trip was a nightmare as I suffered from morning sickness throughout the journey, her warm welcome and affection melted it all. Mama, as we fondly call her, is an agile, beautiful woman in her early 60s, but one would think she was younger with the kind of strength she puts into everything she does. I was born in the city, so it was not uncommon for me to see some chores she did as very strenuous, for example, we had the gas cooker which made cooking easy for us, but in the village, they used firewood woods, which involved putting fire to some pieces of woods and often you have to bend and blow breeze into it or better still use a fan for it to ignite well so it can properly heat your food, and by the time you are done cooking, it wasn't only the food that would be cooked, because your hair and body would also have the smell of smoke. For this reason, I never really fancied cooking in the village though I often helped her out, being the helpful daughter in law I was, and also because even though the method of preparing meals this way was stressful it often ended up with a very unique, smoky and tasty local flavor that I loved so much ...

The Longer Throat Chronicles
Growing up, my siblings and I didn't really have a fancy childhood. There were some things we rarely got, and snacks were one of those things. We loved snacks so much. Snacks were so special to us that whenever any of our moms or our dad came back with a nylon that crinkled in their hands, we got excited because new joy was coming ...

Breathe
I was already a few miles from the airport before the weight of what I was doing landed on me. The quiet hum of the cab engine competed with the thoughts in my head. I leaned my head to the window with my eyes focused on the bald head of my cab driver, yet lost in my surroundings. The cab driver reached for the radio ...

My Week in Review for July 5, 2025, Another Goal Completed!
I'm sorry I have been so absent here on Hive this past week. It hasn't only been on Hive, it's been pretty much everywhere that I've been missing in action as I've been trying to beat COVID round two. Probably more aptly named COVID Back with a Vengeance, or maybe COVID Second Blood. I've been struggling to get the energy to get this post put together, but I'm giving it my best shot ...

A security point [PT/EN]

[EN/PT] For Better Working Conditions
Banner created in canva The healthcare sector in Brazil has always been viewed favorably. Since childhood, when we ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, the most common answer is still: “I want to be a doctor”. This desire to work in healthcare, more specifically in medicine, is widely shared, which has contributed to a significant increase in the supply of doctors today. For a long time, the medical profession has been associated with high salaries and prestige ...

Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Red Lion
"This is one weird way in", I muttered to @anidiotexplores. Talk about going the back way; 'the back way' had a hole large enough for a car to drive in, if you don't mind completely destroying the underside and slashing all the tyres. I have not seen bombed or war torn locations, but the rear of “The Red Lion" could come close. It was tough navigation, but we worked around the huge stone slabs, bricks, half destroyed wooden beams and entered the lower area of the old pub, which appeared to have been built on a steep hill ...

The first is a type of tortoise beetle, or better known as the golden tortoise beetle. It is a type of leaf eating beetle with the scientific name . The second is a type of biting fly, flies in the genus are somewhat different from flies in general which prefer stale food, whereas this fly prefers blood, especially liking to suck cow's blood ...

Holiday 2025 - Bird watching at Upton Warren (2/3)
Time for a Holiday! we usually chose a different location to visit each year, in order to explore both the different places, and the different wildlife they contain. We often book a full week away so we can explore the area properly, but money is tight this year so, we've made do with a mid week break: 2 nights down in the . It might only be for a few days, but we aim to see as much as possible ...
