Why Human Resources (HR) Focus More On Eloquent Speech Than Practical
Hello everyone, how are you doing today? I was wondering why Human Resources (HR) focus their ability on eloquent speech of applicants to select the best applicants for the job during interviews.
Though, I only attended four interviews in my life.
The first was when I graduated from university and I don't want to be idle while waiting for service. This is because I don't like to be idle. I worked in one of the best schools in my environment for months.
The second interview was 2 months after my Service. I couldn't say it was an interview. The white man saw me early in the morning at the company gate and asked a security man to call for me. He asked me to use google sheet to work.
After I finished, I was given a job while hundreds of applicants were in the other room for an interview.
The third time was after three months, I was interviewed for a bigger position in the same organization. Therefore, I attained a height that took some of the employees more than 6 years to attain.
The fourth interview was when I got the government job that I'm doing right now.
With my experiences, I have witnessed how interviewers selected applicants that were very good in communication, applicants that were eloquent in speech and knew how to convince interviewers with his/her speech.
After I was given an appointment in the organization, there was a lady that was interviewed that very day. I was listening to her speech, and how she answered questions from the interviewer. She was given an employment letter after a week.
The first week we worked together, she did not know anything about the work whereas she said that “I have 5 years experience and I was taken abroad because of my experiences".
I asked her, I heard you during the interview that you're an expert?
She said, " please, most of the things I said when I was interviewed were because I needed the job. It was like the job was my last hope. I am not good at it at all. Please, you will put me through because I don't want to lose the job. It is bad to hear that I don't know it after I said it in an interview that I'm an expert.
Today, even if you are not good practically in some discipline, once you can communicate effectively, you may be given the appointment. Especially when you can communicate effectively, eloquently in speech and with a sugar coated-mouth.
I have seen many applications rejected because they are not good in communication, yet they are practically good. It happened to one of my friends. Michael was very good in his field as a chemical engineer. He studied chemical engineering. He was rejected in many interviews because he wasn't eloquent.
After several oral interviews from different organizations, he was not employed. After an oral interview with the company he's working with right now, he was given a practical on the same day and he did it perfectly. That was how he was given an appointment the same day he was interviewed.
My concern is why HR focus more on Eloquent Speech or oral interview than practical?
I understand that Communication is very important. Without communication, there wouldn't be peace as it is right now in the world.
In the Bible, they planned to build a tower that would reach heaven because they were speaking one language. They understood themselves very well; the senders, the receivers and the feedback were aligned. There was no breakage in communication; and that was the reason the mission was established.
When communication is effective, everyone is involved, satisfied and feeling accomplished.
Therefore, I believe HR focuses more on eloquent speech because it is one of the best ways to assess job seekers whether he/she is qualified or not.
But if that is the case, where do people with language barriers can work?
It simply means that there is no space for them in an organization.
Hmm! That is the reason it is hard to see deaf or dumb people working in an organization.
In conclusion, effective communication is very good, it carries everyone along, and everyone feels happy because they are satisfied and the sender gets good feedback from receivers. That is the reason when a motivational speaker is speaking, the listeners feel elated, motivated, inspired, and fulfilling.
There was a motivational speaker I listened to, I was happy during the program and eager to do what I was taught. After a week, I didn't do what I heard from him again.
Therefore, we should also consider other ways when communicating, such as gesture, expression, intention, feeling and more.
We should not only focus on oral or verbal communication. If a mother is more focused on oral communication, a 3 months old baby would suffer from many things. But the mother can touch, look, and feel what the baby is saying. A baby does not need to cry before a mother knows that it is hungry or is not okay.
Different ways should be used to access applicants in an interview.
I stand up for success, and success is not achieved by merely making mouth, No room for laziness, no room for idleness. Success comes to the people who are desperately and consciously searching for it. When it seems unsuccessful or you smell failure around you, never discourage yourself from being successful.

That your second interview is pure grace, wow! That's the definition of being at the right place at the right time. The white man just called on you work with Google sheets and you got a job after that. I guess the story would have been different if you didn't know how to use spreadsheets.
Back in the university, one of my lecturer while advising us on how to prepare for our final year seminar said that the key to delivering a good speech is to sound confident. Even if you said something wrong, the confidence with which you say it will make it seem like it's correct. The same thing applies to interviews, confidence matter a lot in such cases and people who are very eloquent usually excel at interviews, even when they don't know much about the role they are applying to (you still need confidence to even fake it)
yeah! I forgot to add confidence with my article.... Sincerely, eloquent without confidence is equal to Zero.
I also discovered that most of those applicants that got appointment delivered their speech with confidence and eloquent.
Confidence should be number one.
Thank you

Communication skills are essential and most desires in professional life. More preferable Candidate is the one who is skilled in the art of communication and knows multiple languages. However there should be wider approach to selection based on different set of skills, afterall language is just a medium. !LUV !PIZZA

I understood that HR want to see you flawless in communication. He wants to see how confident and eloquent you are; but HR should also not be focused in that area because there are many people that are very good in practical but they cannot express themselves. I
In fact, how can people with language barriers get job in an reputable organizations when everything they want to see is eloquence and confident.
Are we saying that those with language barriers are exempted from getting jobs from reputable organizations.
It shouldn't be like this at all.
I have been into many organization, I haven't seen people with language barriers working there except government parastatal.
I have never seen people with language barriers working in banking sector.
Yeah I agree with you on this some professions requires effective communication skills. Mostly in public relations where public dealing is the only key. !PIZZA
I agreed with you too...
