Full Moon Night: Storytelling and Folklore
Source
This is my epic story of my childhood days. childhood days were very sweet: I don't even know how the supplies came in those days, I ate to the brim.
I don't feel hungry because I ate more than 4 times in a day. I was never conscious of the clothes and shoes I wore in those days; I knew my parents would provide them. I was never worried about my tuition fees; my parents paid unknowingly to me. I was a child that always got what I wanted: my parents brought everything I wanted for me.
food, clothes, money, and toys weren't my problem because I got them easily.
One thing I enjoyed most while I was child was a company of friends gathered together to play. I never pray that our play should finish that night.
We don't always gather together at night; we only gather once or twice a week, especially when the moon is full.
We love to gather when the moon is full; we love the moon so much!
Miss Amara was the coordinator of the night: Miss Amara was a primary school teacher in our village; she teaches English language. Shel loves kids around her. She used to be happy in the midst of children. She was a very kind and beautiful woman. She doesn't like when a kid is hurt.
We gathered in front of her house once or twice a week, sat on the sandy soil to hear stories and folklore from her.
She told us the folklore of a village without a king.
“There was a village called ugola, the king passed away at 107 years. The king had 4 wives and 15 children, 11 boys and four girls. According to the tradition of the village, when a king dies, they have to consult the gods before choosing the next king.
When the gods choose the next king that will ascend to the throne, He chose the last boy which was about 7 years old. His name was Oriade (Head of the crown). Oriade was the last son from the fourth wife. She was given to the king when she celebrated his 100th birthday. Oriade was the only child of his mother.
“Since the gods chose Oriade as the King of the village; they manipulated everything, gave the kingship to the first male child of the king. The first son of the kind was very rich and wealthy; he was an influential person in the community. He used his power, influence and wealth to get the kingship. He was crowned as a king in the village.
The king knew that Oriade might be problematic to him in the future because he knew he wasn't chosen by the oracle. He killed Oriade, and after Oriade’s mother could not endure the pain, she died also.
After 3 years on the throne, the god of the land struck him with a rod and he died immediately. The priest was also struck with a rod but he did not die; the god told him to confess his wrongdoing to the village and how he collected the bribe.
“After the priest confessed in public, he also died there. another priest did a cleansing ritual for the land, and other chiefs that were involved in the atrocities. Ritual was done in the village for seven days to clean the land.
Since the person that was supposed to be the king was killed, the village was without a king for 20 years. This was because the Oracle said, ‘I will tell you the time for the next king.’ Oracle did not speak 20 years later.”
Miss Amara would ask us “what do you learn from folklore?"
The following are the responses from the children;
We should always be contented in any position we are in.
We should not be greedy to hijack other people's positions.
We should not steal what is not our own.
The world is karma, and we should learn how to do good so that others can do good to us.
We should not join evil people to do evil things.
Miss Amara replied, “a round applause for everyone, you all got it right."
She also told us Story telling of a moon fight with a sun, Tortoise, the intelligent boy and more.
I remember the story of an intelligent boy he told us that night. That story made me understand that intelligence could be achieved through hard work such as reading and practicing. That was how one could achieve whatever he set his mind to.
According to the story, the intelligent boy wasn't intelligent initially but he knew that to achieve his goal of being the best, he needed to read and study every time.
He became the best and the most intelligent student through hard- work.
“After several years, the dullard student became a scientist that was recognized in his country."
When I heard this storytelling, I knew I could achieve anything. The story motivated and inspired me to work hard.
I really missed her Storytelling and Folklore, they are my motivation and inspiration.
She did many activities with us such as dancing, singing, and many more.
Her decency, characters, and attitudes made her married to a good and rich man in my environment.
Whenever I travel home, I buy gifts for her. Most of the stories I heard from her keep me going forward in life. Her stories gave me directions. I love her so much.
