Firewood Celebration in the Village Vs Fireworks Night Party In The City
Hello everyone, how are you doing today? One of the moments I don't forget about Christmas or new year is ‘Fireworks’.
But before I came to the city, when I was a kid, I was 7 years old. There was a way we celebrated the new year in the village. After we came back from church around after 12. The little children gathered together, made a fire and put yam on fire.
Before New year, we made provisions for how we could get firewood and tires for the night. We went to the bush to get firewood, and condemned tyres in our surroundings. We gathered them together in a particular spot for a new year party.
The moment the church program is concluded, we all gather together within 30 minutes in a spot for the celebration. We gathered firewood and condemned tyres together, ignited fire on it, and put yams on the fire. One of the rules is that everyone must contribute a tuber of yam for the celebration.

As the fire continued to burn, we called out fellows that were given birth on the 1st of January. We sang birthday songs for them as they were working round the fire. We congratulated the celebrants and shared in their joy.
Some of us that were very bold started to jump over the fire but I was always scared of doing it.
We all removed the yams on the fire, peeled the back of those yams, and began to eat. Since you brought yam, you could take any yam of your choice.
After finishing eating the yams, we organized a combat, and the moment a fighter is attacked and falls to the ground on your back, the attacker is the winner; but if your back does not reach the ground, the attacker has not won. The rule of combat is that no fighter should attack by blowing or boxing an opponent in any part of the body; attackers are to hold themselves, fall themselves on the ground. An attacker who falls his opponent down with face upward and back on the ground is the winner.
This was what we did until 3:00 am or 4:00 am in the morning. There were many of us that would not sleep until 5:00 am.
When I came to the city at a young age, I was forbidden to go out due to security reasons. After 3 years, I was already in the city and I was able to go out.
My first new year celebration was done in a club: There was a particular place where my friends and I loved to celebrate parties, especially new year. The club was very close to my house. I don't like clubs, and I don't go clubbing, but I was motivated by friends to join them. I joined them because three years I was in the city, I didn't enjoy my new year celebration like when I was in the village.

Celebrating the New Year in the city was far different from the village. My friends and I were 7 in numbers, and as we entered the club house, we sat on round chairs. They ordered different kinds of drinks- Whisky, Red label and many others; mixed the liquors together and drank. They ordered pepper soup, and fried meats.
I was drinking and eating yogurt and meat, Steph said, “Chris, why are you drinking yogurt alone, you need to mix it with liquor to enjoy it. Look at this lady, she's drinking lugor and a man like you drinking yogurt. You need to spice things up by mixing red labels with it, it can't do you anything.”
Tobi replied, “You don't need to tell him, take his cup and mix it for him." That was how Tobi mixed a little red label with yogurt for me, “test it Chris, you will see the difference now.” I drank it, "waooo, that is good of you,” they all laughed and shared it with me.
“let me mix another one for you", he mixed the second one and I drank it.
As the DJ was playing, fireworks were everywhere, and people were dancing.
“Chris, that night, you lost your balance, and started vomiting. It was Steph that backed you till we reached home”.
In conclusion, don't take what you can't chew! It was a lesson for me; I don't, I don't drink what my body cannot take.
