Africa Clean Up Initiative
I joined the Africa Clean Up initiative in 2019 with the aim of contributing to the goals of the Africa Clean Up Initiative (ACI).
ACI is a Non-governmental Organization focused to promote a healthy and sustainable environment.
The goals of the Africa Clean Up Initiative are to advocate, campaign, Educate, and sanitation.
The moment I was given an offer letter for the fellowship. I underwent training for ten weeks. It wasn't easy training!
I participated in the following programs during year 2023:
International women day- 8th March 2023
I was just a volunteer that wanted everything good for my environment. I was among the volunteers that made everything work well in the program.
The program was geared towards protecting the rights of girls and women in the digital space. It seems that women in our environment were suffering from gender- based violence on the internet. The program was conducted to enlighten women and girls the right things to do.
The speaker also addressed how women could improve their business through social media platforms.
A few days before the program, the volunteers were called to share fliers to women or girls above 18 years. We shared the fliers for one day to all the local governments in my state.
After the program, we volunteers were given money and before the program, we were given shirts from the program.
World Water Day -22nd March 2023
The theme was “Accelerating the Change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. We did a Campaign with the banner, T-shirts and Fliers “Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis” on it.
We went to primary and secondary schools with convoys sharing fliers and students. Since the program was held in all local governments in my state; volunteers in my local government were not much, so we decided to hire people to join us for the campaign, and they were paid for it.
After the program, 3 boreholes were built in my local government so that the people living in the environment could have access to clean water
The people living in the regions where the boreholes were built lacked access to water, and the majority of the people drink water from rivers.
They were happy when the boreholes were built in the communities. The boreholes and Solar were built in those locations in my local government.
Global Recycling Day -25th March
It was only 20 of us that participated in this program. We were taken to the Omnik Limited facility, the best green producing company. I received a lecture on the importance of planting trees in our environment, and taught how to plant trees.
After we left Omnik Limited, we took a tour to Africa's biggest plastic products manufacturing company to learn the Recycling process. That was when I realized that people that are picking empty bottles on the streets are making money and also make our environment clean.
Next week, we were asked by the state government to plant trees on roads. We did the project for more than a month and we're paid a huge amount of money.
International day of zero waste -may 30
“By 2050 municipal solid waste could rise up to 3.38 billion tons per year.” -United Nations
It was in the plan of the United Nations to achieve a zero waste 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
Lagos is one of the states where solid waste is found everywhere. They made it compulsory for all of us to make a short video by raising awareness of the zero waste initiative, begging people to practice it and advising everyone to make a 60 second video.
I made my video, sent it to most of the people in my WhatsApp contacts, and the majority of my social media platforms.
Since I was part of the volunteers, we received an email to meet at Iyana ipaja, where about 2,000 people were sensitized on the purpose of recycling and the best way to keep the environment healthy.
Insight with Africa Clean Up Initiative
We kept on reaching larger communities through online, Advocatingand educating people; sharing environmental challenges, solutions, and encouraging people and proffer green solutions.
This is what I did every week to make sure people understand the impact of afforestation, greenhouse effects and environmental degradation on our environment.
School Program
Since, students in my school love to drink plastic products such as Pepsi, Coke, Fanta, viju milk and many more. I decided to tell all the students that they should not throw the plastics on the ground. I provided a place where all plastics should be discarded. When the plastic is up to 5 bags, I call the man that used to purchase it from me, and sell everything to him.
I have made thousands of naira from it this year.
Do Not Discard Refuse on the floor
This is an initiative I brought to my school, a student found guilty of discarding plastic or Nylon would have to pick 100 nylon and plastics on the floor as a punishment. I have students in-charge and they count the numbers of what offenders picked on the floor. if it is not up to 100, they will politely tell him to go and pick the remaining numbers before he/she can be freed.
When I was posted to the school, I discovered that the students were discarding plastic and nylon everywhere. There are times they sweep their classes three times in a day.
I knew that the best thing to do was to attach a punishment to any offenders.
The first day 3 students were guilty, I made sure they picked 100 refuse as a punishment.
That was when they knew I was very serious.
Today, the school environment is cleaned because of my initiative.
