Gdansk Ort / Ort Gdański 1623

Zaczynając moją przygodę z numizmatyką sądziłem, że zbieranie monet z I Rzeczpospolitej, to temat zaiste trudny i drogi. Uważałem, że ludzie zbierający takie krążki są niezłymi "tryhardami", wymaga to bowiem wiedzy i kapitału. Myślałem, że nigdy nie będę taki jak oni, że tak bardzo się nie zgubię w odmętach pasji numizmatycznej. Wiecie jak skończyłem? Z małą kolekcją ortów i wielką chęcią na zakup kolejnych monet. Dziś na cel bierzemy orta gdańskiego Zygmunta III Wazy, chcę napisać nie tylko o monecie, ale nadać kontekst historyczny, gdyż jest to jeden z najciekawszych momentów polskiej historii, zapraszam!

Ort Gdański 1623

Orty gdańskie to temat rzeka, jest ich naprawdę sporo i często różnią się od siebie tylko detalami. Monety takie są też rzadsze niż ich koronny odpowiednik, a co za tym idzie droższe. Przedstawiany egzemplarz jest wart minimum 100 dolarów. Orty z tej mennicy w mojej subiektywnej opinii są ładniejsze niż te koronne. Mennica w gdańsku powstała już w XIII wieku, później miasto przestało mieć prawa do bicia monet, ale przywilej ten został przywrócony w 1454 r. za sprawą Kazimierza Jagiellończyka. Mennica w Gdańsku to też pierwsza mennica, która zaczęła bić orty w 1608 roku.

Na awersie widnieje popiersie króla Zygmunta III Wazy w koronie i zbroi, zwrócone w prawo. W otoku znajduje się inskrypcja "SIG III D G REX POL M D L", jest to skrót z łaciny, który oznacza "Zygmunt III, z Bożej łaski król Polski, wielki książę litewski". Po bokach głowy możemy zauważyć liczbę 16, która mówi, że ten ort wart jest 16 groszy. Na rewersie widzimy herb Gdańska, czyli dwa krzyże pod koroną, podtrzymywane przez dwa lwy. W otoku znajduje się napis "MONETA CIVIT GEDANENSIS", czyli „Moneta miasta Gdańska”. Znajdziemy tu jeszcze liczbę 23, która oznacza rok wybicia - 1623.

Parametry

Rodzaj boku - Gładki.

Awers/Rewers - Wiele źródeł wskazuje, że nieodwrócony, ale z doświadczenia wiem, że orty były wybijane jak popadnie.

Średnica - 29mm.

grubość - 1mm - Stare monety mają to do siebie, że są cienkie.

Rodzaj stopu - Srebro.

Kontekst Historyczny

Czasy panowania Wazów to złoty okres w historii Polski, historii polskiego mennictwa oraz historii polskiego wojska. Dynastia Wazów rządziła przez lekko ponad 80 lat i to są te czasy, które Polacy wspominają najczęściej. W latach 1587 r. - 1668 r. doszło do wielu polskich zwycięstw i kilka z nich chciałbym krótko przedstawić.

Bitwa pod Kircholmem

Było to jedno z najciekawszych zwycięstw Rzeczpospolitej. Hetman polny litewski Jan Karol Chodkiewicz poprowadził 3600 wojaków przeciwko 11 tysiącom żołnierzy szwedzkich. Starty wojska polskiego były minimalne, a szwedzkie ogromne.

Bitwa pod Kłuszynem oraz hołd ruski

Do starcia doszło 4 lipca 1610 roku nieopodal Moskwy. Geniusz strategiczny Hetmana polnego koronnego Stanisława Żółkiewskiego oraz determinacja polskich żołnierzy doprowadziła do rozbicia około 5 razy większej armii rosyjskiej oraz najemniczej. Następnie Polacy zdobyli kreml, a bojarzy zdetronizowali cara Wasyla. Rok później na Krakowskim Przedmieściu Wasyl IV Szujski musiał się ukorzyć przed polskim władcą. Zdarzenia te doprowadziły do tego, że przez 3 lata rosyjskim carem był Władysław IV Waza.

Bitwa pod Chocimiem oraz studukatówka

Kolejnym wielkim zwycięstwem Rzeczpospolitej była bitwa pod Chocimiem. Polska odniosła wtedy taktyczne zwycięstwo nad Imperium Osmańskim. Na cześć tych wydarzeń została wybita okolicznościowa moneta 100 dukatów z 1621 roku. Była to najdroższa polska moneta, która wykonana była ze złota próby 0.986 i ważyła 350 gramów.

When I started my numismatic adventure, I thought that collecting coins from the First Republic was indeed a difficult and expensive subject. I thought that the people who collect such discs are good ‘tryhards’, as it requires knowledge and capital. I thought I would never be like them, that I would not get so lost in the depths of numismatic passion. Do you know how I ended up? With a small collection of orts and a great desire to buy more coins. Today we are taking the Gdansk ort of Sigismund III Vasa as our target, I want to write not only about the coin, but to give a historical context, as it is one of the most interesting moments of Polish history, I invite you!

Gdansk Ort 1623

Danzig orts are a river topic, there are really quite a lot of them and they often differ from each other only in details. Such coins are also rarer than their crown counterpart and therefore more expensive. The featured piece is worth a minimum of $100. The orts from this mint, in my subjective opinion, are nicer than the crown ones. The mint in Gdansk was established as early as the 13th century, later the city ceased to have the right to mint coins, but this privilege was restored in 1454 by Casimir Jagiellon. The mint in Gdańsk was also the first to start minting orts in 1608.

The obverse features the bust of King Sigismund III Vasa wearing a crown and armour, facing right. In the rim is the inscription ‘SIG III D G REX POL M D L’, an abbreviation from Latin that means ‘Sigismund III, by God's grace King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania’. On the sides of the head we can see the number 16, which says that this ort is worth 16 pennies. On the reverse we can see the coat of arms of Gdańsk, i.e. two crosses under a crown, supported by two lions. In the rim is the inscription ‘MONETA CIVIT GEDANENSIS’, meaning ‘Coin of the City of Gdańsk’. There is also the number 23, which indicates the year of minting - 1623.

Parameters

Type of side - Smooth.

Obverse/Rewers - Many sources indicate that it is uncirculated, but I know from experience that orts were struck as they fell.

Diameter - 29mm.

Thickness - 1mm - Old coins have a way of being thin.

Type of alloy - Silver.

Historical Context

The reign of the Vasa dynasty was a golden period in Polish history, the history of Polish minting and the history of the Polish military. The Vasa dynasty ruled for slightly more than 80 years and these are the times that Poles remember most often. The years 1587 - 1668 saw many Polish victories and I would like to briefly present a few of them.

Battle of Kircholm

This was one of the most interesting victories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Field Hetman of Lithuania Jan Karol Chodkiewicz led 3,600 warriors against 11,000 Swedish soldiers. The losses of the Polish army were minimal, while those of the Swedish army were enormous.

Battle of Kluszyn and the Russian homage

The clash took place on 4 July 1610 near Moscow. The strategic genius of Field Hetman of the Crown Stanisław Żółkiewski and the determination of the Polish soldiers led to the smashing of the Russian army, which was about five times larger, as well as a mercenary army. The Poles then captured the Kremlin and the boyars dethroned Tsar Vasyl. A year later, at Krakowskie Przedmieście, Vasily IV Shuisky had to humble himself before the Polish ruler. These events led to Wladyslaw IV Vasa being the Russian Tsar for 3 years.

The Battle of Chocim and the Hundred Years' War

Another great victory of the Republic was the Battle of Chocim. Poland then won a tactical victory over the Ottoman Empire. In honour of these events, a commemorative coin of 100 ducats was struck in 1621. It was the most expensive Polish coin, which was made of 0.986 gold and weighed 350 grams.
