A Bit of DIY Chair Customization

The Mrs told me this morning that she was going to chuck out an office chair that has gone unused for ages. To chuck out big items in Japan, or at least in Hiroshima, where we live, you have to arrange to have it picked up by the local municipality. It's known as "sodai gomi" (粗大ごみ) or "bulky junk." You have to schedule a special collection, stick special collection stickers on the "sodai gomi" items and of course pay to have it taken away. (I remember, back in the good old days there was a special day called "big gomi" day when you could drag your old furniture and other bulky items to the neighbourhood trash collection area and dump it there for free. It was a happy day for newly arrived English language teachers as it gave them an opportunity to furnish their flats with other people's cast off furniture for free!)
Anyway, the chair the Mrs was planning to dispose of is a fine piece of office furniture and much better quality than the el-cheapo one that I've been using for the last couple of decades. The only problem with the Mrs's chair is that it has no arms on it whereas my old one does - or did...
This afternoon, I did something very unusual for me: I indulged in a bit of DIY! Looking at the chairs, I thought that I might be able to take the arms off mine and put them on hers, so I grabbed a Phillips screwdriver and dismantled my chair to see what the base plates that attach the arms to the seat of the chair looked like. Sure enough, they had the same three-hole pattern that I'd found on the base of the Mrs's chair, so I took them off and they screwed pat into the underside of the Mrs's chair.
And with that, I am now the happy owner of an upgraded and customized chair WITH arms.
Of course, I had to put my old chair back together so that only ONE piece of "sodai gomi" would be chucked out to avoid paying for multiple items if I'd left it in bits.
Well, now that that rather satisfactory bit of DIY is over, here I am lounging on my new chair, drinking Chianti spritzer and typing this. In short, back to normal, and no more DIY for another few years if all goes well.
Cheers!

Nice! Congratulations on your successful DIY improvisation, David! I love when things like that work out so well! 😁🙏💚✨🤙
The funny thing is, I'd looked at both chairs before with this idea in mind, but since there was nothing wrong with my old chair, I never attempted it. It was only when the Mrs said she was going to get rid of the chair in September that I took action - a deadline is a great motivator! Before, I doubted that the arms of my old chair would fit the other chair, but yesterday, it all seemed - and proved to be - very straightforward and simple.

Hahaha...that's great, and yep, time constraints can definitely snap us into focus fast. That's very cool that everything did turn out to be so simple. That's how everything should be...lol! 😁🙏💚✨🤙
