Who is a youth corper in Nigeria?
I am sure some of you are wandering what it means to be a youth corper, well this service is an initiative by the federal government of Nigeria where it is mandatory for youths who has just graduated from the university or the polytechnic to undergo a one year service to the nation. This was a means to promote national unity and to bring together different ethnic groups. In this case , people are transferred from their states to another to experience culture and traditions of other tribes and also give their selfless service to the communities they are posted to. They are made to teach in schools, serve as interns in companies, hospitals, museums and so on.

As a youth Corper during my time, I was posted to a Yoruba state close to Lagos so I was able to navigate through where I was posted and Lagos at the same time. It also gave me the opportunity to explore Lagos and some beautiful places in Lagos. While in service, I was able to build a connection with my co youth Service members as an organization in the Catholic Church. Reminiscing back to this time, I'm glad that I didn't take it for granted when I had a chance at some point I was made the financial Secretary of the organization. During the 1-year service it was quite eventful because we organized and partic in various activities that were worthwhile and interesting.

We had several road trips but one that was very memorable the trip to Abeokuta, where we saw The olumo Rock. It was an interesting ride from where we were through ogun state to Abeokuta. Leaks when we got into the bus the first thing we did because we're with our spiritual director who was a reverend father was to say a prayer and our rosary after this we sang while beating the local drums we carried around. At some point we got to a police checkpoint and they were amazed at how organized and how happy we were going on this trip. When the brain are the singing was done, a priest who was very familiar with the road were passing through explains the significance of some specific areas in abeokuta to us.

On getting to the location, we had so much fun in climbing the high rock with so many steps to the top of the mountain. It was stressful but the willingness to get to the top of the mountain because all those were making it to the top was the goal. You took lots of pictures and immersed ourselves in the beauty of the environment we found ourselves at that moment. At the top of the rock you could almost see the whole of abeokuta City with their Brown roofing sheets.

When we were done in this place we bordered by bus again and headed straight to the major seminary located in the area, interacted with seminarians who are all dressed in white cassock and depressed showed us around the school. It was an interesting I trust me, gather together to have fun it is unlimited and exciting. This is why till today I cannot forget how much fun we had going on this journey. So many other roaches were encountered during my 1 year service like going to the beach in Lagos going for our 3 days camping as coppers and so on.

One of the best place to visit in Abeokuta, Ogun state is the Olumo rock, it has so much history with it and it is one of the pride of the state. The view from the top of the rock is more than amazing.

It sounds like you truly enjoyed Youth Corp :) Do you think it should continue for the next generation?
