Sketchbook 009 - Acrylic on paper (Eye painting practice with steps)

Hi Hive!

Back again with another drawing/painting post! I really enjoy doing these, drawing is just too much fun. This one is from about two weeks ago...just a practice piece, to help me figure out how to paint shiny pretty eyes (I really like drawing eyes)

The basic concept here is pretty simple but was a little bit challenging to create. Here is the process:

Step 1 - Just a basic eye shape. I used two circles, one for the eye part and one that will serve as a guide for where to put my skull.

Step 2 - Adding details for the skull and eye in their respective circles. (If anyone wants eye or skull drawing step by step posts, let me know!)

Step 3 - For this one, it was easier to add the ink lines while drawing, instead of at the end of the drawing, this was just to save me some confusion later on.

Step 4 - once all the details are added, line the last parts in ink, and erase pencil lines.

Now...we will paint!

Step 5 - Fill the entire eye area with white, to create a base for painting. (It doesn't look white on the photo, but it is, just plain white)

Step 6 - Keeping in mind that the eye isn't flat, add some shading and roundness to it. Add little red details on the inner and outer corners of the eye and lower eyelid.

Step 7 - Add eye colour and skull details, it was a little bit complicated but I think it looks okay enough.

Step 8 - The fun but not so easy part! Add shading and reflections (also probably a whole other post I could consider doing there)

Step 9 - Just some final details and fiddly bits.

And it is done! It isn't perfect, but I learnt a lot while creating it, which was the point. Hope it was helpful, or at the very least, entertaining.

That's all for now!
Till next time!

Thank you! Things are more or less the same, but a day off, spent eating ice cream and catching up on some tv shows really helped. 😁
