Portrait of Melancholy - A Study of Hope and Despair

Greetings friends, hope you are well tonight.

A quick piece in Bic pen, completed in under two hours, no pencil used, no erasing. If not for my melancholy mood and the seemingly endless storms, I would have been rather proud of this one.

Fells like it has been ages since I have touched pen to paper. I need to be in the rainbow light with my muse once again, before the clouds take over, to feel the sun and warm ocean breeze once again. Till then, we do what we can and cuddle cats.

Just a simple sketch, the focus being an attempt to capture the feeling of melancholy in a simple facial expression.

I do not strictly stick to any formal techniques, rather opting for a type of hatching focused on emotion instead of perfection. Even imaginary faces need many flaws.

Sticking to themes of melancholy, loneliness and depression, he stares out from the darkness, yet his face is bathed in light.

The waning crescent moon illuminates his face, soon the new moon will leave him in darkness, yet from that hopelessness a new beginning, a new moon, is born. The cycle continues. Life goes on.

A simple sketch but I like it. It is subtle enough to be interpreted differently, but to me, it represents hope and despair and the cyclical nature of such things. I could do better, I could do worse.

Till next time!
