Los libros no son solo páginas, impresas o digitales. Los libros son un túnel invisible entre la manifestación del autor y el lector; no son solo letras y palabras, es un texto que representa una parte del mundo del autor. Representar adecuadamente el diseño de un libro es convertir la lectura en una experiencia inmersiva. La portada, el respeto de los espacios en blanco y la disposición de todo el texto son el conjunto de elementos que acompañan la experiencia. El contenido del libro debe estar acompañado de un buen diseño. Esta es la esencia del diseño editorial.

Books are not just pages, printed or digital. Books are an invisible tunnel between the author's expression and the reader; they are not just letters and words, they are a text that represents a part of the author's world. To adequately represent the design of a book is to turn reading into an immersive experience. The cover, the use of white space, and the layout of the text are all elements that contribute to the experience. The content of the book must be accompanied by good design. This is the essence of editorial design.

Cuando empecé a estudiar diseño, lo primero que me atrapó fue el diseño editorial. Es una ciencia que va más allá de la portada, es marcar el ritmo de los ojos y la lectura, es construir un orden que brinde ganas de continuidad. Existen libros que se pueden leer muy rápidos y otros muy lentos, y eso no es casualidad, es diseño en acción. La diagramación y la disposición de los títulos y todo el texto se construye con intención, no solo para leer, sino para sentir la lectura. Realmente me resulta apasionante, cada cosa tiene un sentido y una razón, todo enfocado en la recepción que pueda tener el lector. Me parece muy interesante.

When I started studying design, the first thing that caught my attention was editorial design. It is a science that goes beyond the cover; it sets the pace for the eyes and reading, and builds an order that makes you want to continue. Some books can be read very quickly and others very slowly, and that is no coincidence; it is design in action. The layout and arrangement of the titles and all the text is constructed with intention, not only for reading, but for feeling the reading. I find it really exciting; everything has a meaning and a reason, all focused on the reader's reception. I find it very interesting.

He trabajado en Adobe InDesign, una herramienta especializada que asusta al ver todo su poder. Este programa es otra experiencia, permite viajar entre las jerarquías tipográficas, los márgenes, organizar las páginas maestras; además, de todo el orden visual que posee de manera estructurada que facilita el diseño y la maquetación página tras página. Este instrumento de diseño te facilita mucho y te colabora de manera sencilla a darle vida al libro sin aún el libro existir. Es solo confiar en los conocimientos y la coherencia de cada detalle plasmado en el diseño. A pesar de que no tengo un ejemplar propio en físico, en alguna oportunidad tuve el placer de tocar y revisar el de un conocido; lo recuerdo muy bien, como cada detalle creado en el proceso digital se plasmaba en el discurso del papel.

I have worked with Adobe InDesign, a specialised tool that is daunting when you see its full power. This programme is another experience altogether, allowing you to navigate between typographical hierarchies and margins and organise master pages. It also has a structured visual order that facilitates design and layout page by page. This design tool makes your job much easier and helps you bring the book to life even before it exists. You just have to trust the knowledge and consistency of every detail captured in the design. Although I don't have a physical copy of my own, I once had the pleasure of touching and reviewing one belonging to an acquaintance. I remember it very well, how every detail created in the digital process was captured in the discourse of the paper.

A pesar de que la era digital nos sobrepasa, un buen diseño editorial siempre marcará la diferencia. La experiencia del lector será distinta porque no es solo "tirar" todo el texto en páginas, es darle una coherencia visual que brinde un gusto y agrado al lector a que la lectura sea placentera página tras página. En conclusión, un buen diseño no es un capricho, tampoco un adorno, por el contrario, es la esencia misma del mensaje. El diseño trasciende, buen sea que se lea en formato digital o impreso. El diseño editorial es invisible, no improvisa.

Although the digital age is overtaking us, good editorial design will always make a difference. The reader's experience will be different because it is not just a matter of ‘throwing’ all the text onto pages, but rather giving it a visual coherence that makes it enjoyable and pleasant for the reader to read page after page. In conclusion, good design is not a whim, nor is it decoration; on the contrary, it is the very essence of the message. Design transcends, whether read in digital or printed format. Editorial design is invisible; it is not improvised.
