Dragon Ball: Advance Adventure - An Epic Platform Journey

An Epic Platform Journey

primero.gif

Dragon Ball: Advance Adventure is a Game Boy Advance title that immerses us in the world of Dragon Ball, and well, anyone who reads my posts will know that I'm a hardcore fan of the franchise. Unlike other games based on this popular series, focused on versus fighting, Advance Adventure focuses on an unusual genre for Goku: platformers. Years later we would see this formula repeated in Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo. Game that I will talk about in another post, but I already say that I think the work was not as well achieved as in this title, with which I share my experience with you.

The Story

The game follows the plot from the initial meeting between Goku and Bulma, at the beginning of the series, to the epic defeat of the evil Piccolo, but for now I only tried the first arc of the series, where we face pilaf and we go having those little fights with mercenaries and of course... the appearance of our beloved, dear, hated and reviled Lone Wolf, Yamcha. In other words, this game covers the whole story in which Goku is still a little boy. As we progress, we encounter action sequences intertwined with illustrations that narrate the familiar story. At times, these illustrations vary a bit to justify certain levels of gameplay. Which is understandable if we value the format and the limitations of the Game Boy Advance.

Gameplay and Game Modes

Advance Adventure presents itself as an action platformer, rather than a game of skill. Instead of facing classic leaps of faith, much of the difficulty comes from the final enemies, this is where this game shines with all the brilliance, as each item poses to apply a combat strategy where we will apply the mechanics in the most strategic and careful way to win. In this game, the combat mechanics are similar to Metal Slug, which adds a touch of fun and excitement. I just have a great time with platform games.

The game offers two main modes:

  • Story Mode: Here we follow the plot of the first Dragon Ball volumes. Action sequences are combined with illustrations that tell us the story. As we progress, we unlock characters and face unique challenges.

  • In this mode, we can face most of the characters we have unlocked in the story mode. Although the mechanics are similar to Street Fighter, there are some notable differences. For example, characters can defend themselves with a block bar, and we jump with the A button.

In terms of graphics, Advance Adventure gets a solid score, I give it a 9/10. The music, while not that of the series, is also great, cool, you can feel the effort of the soundtrack. The game offers a fun experience with good gameplay.

Dragon Ball: Advance Adventure is a hidden gem in the vast world of Dragon Ball video games, replaying it has been a blast, so I'll be uploading gameplay videos with what I'm missing... If you're a fan of the series and enjoy platform games, this title is an excellent choice for your Game Boy Advance. Remember it?

I know several Dragon Ball games on the GBA and I even played several, but I had never seen this one and it looks pretty good, to the point that, even today seeing the gifs and reading the post, I feel like play it. I'll keep it on my list just in case one day I get around to trying it haha.

Without a doubt this is by far one of the best Dragon Ball games. Not because it complements a story and offers a new story, but because it is EXTREMELY FAITHFUL TO THE ANIME. I grew up with Goku and this game is one of my favorites of all the games that have come out. Excellent to see that someone else is enjoying this great game, thanks for sharing.
