The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 10, Post #2

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 10:6-8

We left off in the middle of a threat related to locusts last week, God speaking through Moshe (Moses) saying, "And they shall eat what is left to you after the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours that grows in the field..." Today we continue that dialogue, going on about how the bugs would fill the houses like never seen before throughout all the generations.

Sometimes, though I think this is the first time on this blog, the verse numbers come mid-sentence. Moving on, the scriptures say that Moshe left after repeating what the Creator told him to say. We know it was YHVH speaking because the things said keep coming true within a day or so.

The ruler's servants then chime in saying Moshe is a snare to the Mitsraim (Egyptians), and begging the leader to let the people go. They went on to say, "don't your understand Mitsraim is ruined?"

So they call Moshe back in and Far'oh (Pharaoh) tells Moshe to go and serve YHVH (God's name). "But", there is always a but, "which ones will be going?" This reminds me of the condition of today's believers. God wants us to do something and we reply "but, I can't do that now" or "But first I need to buy..." If he is asking us to do a thing, we are not lacking anything to do that task. It usually means we are unwilling to take a leap of faith.

It seems that Far'oh is hoping to keep some of them in Mitsraim and cut his losses. After all, he knows that they will be going three days journey into the wilderness, and we all know what that means.

Today's reading

English

...and they shall fill your houses and the houses of all your servants and of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.' " Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh's servants said to him, "How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve YHVY their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?" So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. And he said to them, "Go, serve YHVH your God. But which ones are to go?"
