The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 50, Post #5
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Genesis 50:22-26
This is the last passage we will read from Genesis. If you are still with me, congratulations for reading the entire book of Genesis with me in Hebrew. Next week, we will be going into the book of Exodus where we will see what happened to the descendants of Joseph and all his brothers who were living there.
Today, we are seeing Joseph's life coming to an end along with the close of the book of Genesis. This is the book that saw The Creation, Noah, and the patriarchs that led to where we are today.
It turns out that Joseph had made it to 110 years old before he died. He was able to see his children's children to the third generation. He repeated the same move that Jacob did, meaning that he counted two of his grandchildren as his own before he died.
He then told his brothers that that God would surely visit them and that he would take them out of the land of Mitsraim (Egypt) and into the promised land that he had vowed to give to the line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He also made sure they knew he wanted his bones taken with when they leave Egypt.
Next week we will see what happened to the brothers twelve and their children as we make a jump forward in time and continue reading about life in Egypt. Get ready to read the Exodus story.

So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father's house. Joseph lived for 110 years. And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation. The children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were counted as Joseph's own. And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Thanks for reading.
This is a really significant detail, as the grandchildren of Joseph were considered "Sons of Joseph", even though they were "Egyptian" in almost every way, being raised in Egypt, with presumably an Egyptian mother and Manassah (son of the famous Joseph) as father.
True. I think you just answered the question people have always had about mixed race marriage. The King of the Universe sees all humans as just that, human. Yet, many Jewish parents would be aghast if their son brought home a girl of another race/culture, yet God never mentions any of that folly in this story. Talk about inclusive!
We will see others in the next book, Exodus, that are completely shunned by The Creator. Clue, they were not human and had six fingers instead of five.
The Creator is very inclusive, look at Ruth who as a Moabite was forbidden enter the assembly (according to His own words) even to the 10th generation (Deut 23:3), yet she was accepted as one of His people. Her descendant just a few generations later was King David!
Yes, those who are excluded are not even human. It's an uncomfortable thought, but there are some "vessels of wrath prepared for destruction" among our societies, going all the way back to Genesis 6. Yet for all humanity He "desires all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth."
let's put the Word of God in practice
Always a privilege to always know more about the teaching of the Bible.
First of all, happy Sunday good friend. It's amazing to see how Joseph's story ends with such a strong emphasis on family and faith. The way he included his grandchildren and reminded his brothers of God's promises is truly inspiring to me
Today is the first work day of the week. So of course, I am working today. I am happy to work so it is a happy day. I work in the tech industry and we are so far behind do to failing equipment, I am barely able to get my weekly post out on time. I hope you all understand that if I miss responding to you, it is not my intention.
Family is also my focus and they get a hundred percent of my time and energy on Shabbat. If you are of on Sundays, may your day of rest be filled with love and family too.
