The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 9, Post #1

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 8:29-32

After the gnats and flies, we are now in a new chapter, but on the same topic of plagues. This is all about a power struggle between God and Far'oh (Pharaoh). Welcome to Chapter 9, where Moshe (Moses) is informing the ruler that his livestock is in jeopardy.

God tells Moshe to go in and see Far'oh. Tell him, "Thus ways YHVH, the God of the Hebrews." He shortens it saying, "Let my people go that they may serve me..." I won't type the whole thing out but he is again saying that this time, if he refuses to let them go, the plague will be very severe and all the livestock will die. (He names them all by type)

The Almighty then informs him that there will be a distinction between the animals of haMitsraim (the Egyptians) and the Hebrews, meaning God's people will not lose livestock like the Mitsraim will. God then sets a time limit for him to perform the task. He told Far'oh he has until tomorrow.

I think Moshe is getting the idea now. At first he was disappointed when the threat of loss failed. As of this post, also, the verse numbers match perfectly in the Hebrew and English, so I have pulled the English verse numbers out of the English text - easier to read.

Then YHVH said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says YHVH, the God of the Hebrews, "Let my people go, that they may serve me. For if you refuse to let them go and still hold them, behold, the hand of YHVH will fall with a very severe plague upon your livestock that are in the field, the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flocks. But YHVH will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that belongs to the people of Israel shall die."'" And YHVH set a time, saying, "Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land."

The distinction between the Egyptians' livestock and the Hebrews' is such a powerful detail. We really shouldn't trivialize divine protection and separation. I'm Looking forward to more knowledge 🙏🙏🙏
