The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 16, Post #7
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 16:32-36
We got the last clue about this strange substance, called bread from heaven, last week. Its taste was like coriander made with honey. This week, we wrap up the chapter with more from The Almighty. He wants them to take a tenth of an epha and save it for all generations, so that they can see what the people ate for forty years while in the desert.
Moshe (Moses) told Aharon (Aaron) to put the "Mahn" into a jar and place it before YHVH to be kept throughout their generations. As commanded, Aharon did so and placed the jar before ha-eh-Doot (the testimony). At this point, the Ark of the Covenant had not been created. But we see that there is a place, called ha-eh-Doot that must be located near YHVH (God himself).
The rest of this chapter is written as if looking back on these events, like a narrator, mentioning the length of time that they ate this bread and that it fed them until the time they arrived at border to the land of k'Na-ahn (Canaan). There is a lot yet to be experienced before the people get to that border.
Today's Reading
English
Moses said, "This is what YHVH has commanded: 'Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.' " And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before YHVH to be kept throughout your generations." As YHVH commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony to be kept. The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan. (An omer is the tenth part of an ephah.)
