The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 16, Post #3
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 16:9-13
Last week we heard all of what YHVH would be doing, the promise of meat to eat and that they will see God's glory and know that he is YHVH. That line is seen very frequently in the scriptures. Let's see which of those three promisees will be fulfilled today.
The reading says v'yo-Mare Moshe el Aharon (And Moses said to Aaron) tell the people of Israel to come before YHVH because he has heard your grumblings... While he was still saying that, the people turned toward the wilderness (likely desert) and saw the glory of the Creator in a cloud and God spoke to Moshe saying, "I have heard grumblings of the people Israel. Speak to them and say, 'Bein ha-are-Vayeem toch'loo basar (in the evening, you will eat meat) and in the morning bread will satisfy you. Then you will know that I am YHVH.'"
There is the common act of a human counterpart beginning to do as God asks and the actions of God kick into gear at nearly the same time.
Aharon started to speak of the event and God appears in a cloud. Moshe is told to tell the people about the coming meat, and this quail fly in, covering the camp. I am assuming we will see the promised bread in the morning, that is for next week.
Today's reading
English
Then Moses said to Aaron, "Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, 'Come near before YHVH, for he has heard your grumbling.'" And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of YHVH appeared in the cloud. And YHVH said to Moses, "I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am YHVH your God."'
In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp.
