The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 12, Post #6

avatar

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 12:24-28

We got the warning not to eat anything with leaven in it last week. Moshe (Moses) was speaking to the people, telling them all that the Creator had said to him. We are continuing to hear what is required of the people today.

God tells them that they will observe "this rite" forever. Then he states that they will continue to observe the Moed (appointed time) after the Almighty brings them into the land that he promised to their fathers.

And when your children ask, "what do you mean by this service?" tell them it is the sacrifice of the Passover of God because he passed over your houses in Mitsraim (Egypt) when he struck the Mitsraim (Egyptians). When Moshe was finished speaking, the people bowed their heads and worshipped.

The people went forth and did as they had been instructed.

This 'holiday' is still celebrated every year to this day. It takes several hours to go through the Seder (the order) in order to do all the things it memorializes.

Today's reading

English

You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever. And when you come to the land that YHVH will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service. And when your children say to you, 'What do you mean by this service?' you shall say, 'It is the sacrifice of YHVH's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses' " And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

Then the people of Israel went and did so; as YHVH had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.
