Greetings dear hivers, especially to those who enjoy movies any day of the week. On this occasion I want to talk to you about my impressions of this film by the Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés: Red lights (Hidden Powers in Spanish) from 2012. For someone like me who does not have streaming services, it is very entertaining to find this kind of work on Youtube, where there is everything without exaggerating a bit and most importantly: it is free. Well my friends, get comfortable and get ready for the trip to the world of images made into stories.

En esta oportunidad les quiero conversar acerca de mis impresiones sobre esta película del director español Rodrigo Cortés: Poderes ocultos (Red lights in english) del 2012. para alguien como yo que no dispone de servicios de streaming resulta muy entretenido encontrar esta clase de trabajos en You Tube, dónde hay de todo sin exagerar ni un poco y lo más importante: es gratis. Bueno, ponganse comodos y alistense para el viaje hacia el mundo de las imágenes hechas historias.

Synopsis / Sinopsis

An experienced investigator of psychic phenomena, Dr. Margaret Mathenson (Sigourney Weaver) together with her intense assistant, Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) are in charge of unmasking false demonstrations of paranormal experiences and with this, take the swindlers to jail. A character from the past reappears causing great commotion for his demonstrations of power, it is Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) who had retired 30 years earlier wrapped in mystery and controversy by the sudden death of a detractor of his. Two forces seem destined to collide, scientific reason and faith in the metapsychic, a struggle embodied by Tom and Silver where the very nature of both will determine the outcome of events.

Un personaje del pasado reaparece causando gran conmoción por sus demostraciones de poder, se trata de Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) quien se había retirado 30 años antes envuelto en misterio y polémica por la muerte repentina de un detractor suyo. Dos fuerzas parecen destinadas a colisionar, la razón científica y la fe en lo metapsíquico, lucha encarnada por Tom y Silver en donde la naturaleza propia de ambos determinará el desenlace de los acontecimientos.

My impressions / Mis impresiones

Seeing a scene in the first minute of the film where we find Cilian Murphy next to Sigourney Weaver already makes you expect things from such a production. However, it seemed to me that the opportunity was wasted, as Cortés presents us with a sleeping Weaver as a co-pilot and Murphy asking a rather silly question as a joke. I suppose the justification for such a scene is to tell the viewer that the trip has been a long one for both of them and they must have very good reasons.

Ver al primer minuto de cinta una escena donde encontramos a Cilian Murphy junto a Sigourney Weaver ya hace que uno espere cosas de tal producción. No obstante, me pareció que se desperdició la oportunidad, pues Cortés nos presenta a una Weaver durmiendo de copiloto y a Murphy haciendo una pregunta un poco tonta a manera de chiste. Supongo que la justificación de tal escena es decir al espectador que el viaje ha sido largo para ambos y han de tener muy buenas razones.

After such deep dialogue they arrive at their destination, where after another couple of gender jokes we see the pair of investigators doing their work in an old house that is suffering the onslaught of paranormal forces. This intro lasts about ten minutes and we can see the synergy between the two experts when facing such circumstances. De Niro enters the scene with his character Simon Silver, he is landing in a private plane, with a superb and imposing character, when he gets off the plane he allows the viewer to notice that he is blind. In these first minutes Cortés embarks us on the metaphor of the journey. Who is coming and who is going, we will discover as the plot unfolds.

Después de tan profundo diálogo llegan a su destino, donde luego de otro par de chistes de género vemos a la pareja de investigadores haciendo su trabajo en una vieja casa que está sufriendo los embates de fuerzas paranormales. Unos diez minutos dura esta intro en la podemos ver la sinergia entre ambos expertos a la hora de enfrentar tales circunstancias. Entra en escena De niro con su personaje Simon Silver, se halla aterrizando en un avión privado, de carácter soberbio e imponente al bajar del avión permite al espectador notar que es invidente. En estos primeros minutos Cortés nos embarca en la metáfora del viaje. Quién va o quién viene lo iremos descubriendo a medida que se desarrolla la trama.

I can say that the movie is entertaining. The performances of Murphy and De Niro stand out. The director had the elements to make this work, but I feel that at one point in the movie he lost his way. It was only the theatrical ability of both actors that brought about a good final scene that was convincing. The movie's strengths: The cast, full of stars like those already mentioned, but we must highlight Toby Jones and Elizabeth Olsen; excellent scenery and photography with a musicalization that fulfills its role of creating the dark atmosphere of the work; and the director's ability to weave the suspenseful narrative. Weak points: I noticed the ups and downs in the dialogues, which went from being bad jokes to being deep conversations. The bathroom fight scene was shocking. I think it was not only unnecessary, but it broke the filmmaker's narrative thread, which was focused on the psychological struggle. The final plot is elegant in a way and makes sense of the title of this article, but I feel it loses steam because of the aforementioned bathroom fight scene.

Puedo decir que la película es entretenida, destacan las actuaciones de Murphy y De niro. El director tenía en la mano elementos para triunfar con este trabajo pero siento que en un punto de la cinta se perdió el rumbo y solo la capacidad histriónica de ambos actores lograron una buen escena final que resultó convincente. Los puntos fuertes de la cinta: El reparto, lleno de estrellas como las ya mencionadas pero hay que resaltar a Toby Jones y Elizabeth Olsen; excelente escenografía y fotografía con una musicalización que cumple su rol de crear la atmósfera oscura de la obra; y la capacidad del director de ir tejiendo la narrativa de suspenso. Puntos débiles: percibí altibajos en los diálogos que iban de los chistes malos a conversaciones profundas. La escena de la pelea en el baño, fue chocante. Creo que fue, no sólo innecesaria, sino que rompió el hilo narrativo del realizador que venía centrándose en la lucha psicológica. El plot final es en cierto sentido elegante y da sentido al título de este artículo pero siento que pierde fuerza por la escena antes mencionada de la pelea en el baño.
