Crackdown on Bitcoin Miners Stealing Electricity in Indonesia

Authorities in Indonesia raided ten sites suspected of Bitcoin mining with energy stolen from the national grid. Although Indonesia is a country where the crypto adoption is growing fast however its not exactly known as a hub for mining.

Electricity theft in Indonesia is considered a criminal offense and the penalty could be five years of jail or paying upto twice the value of the unpaid electricity in fine, under the law in the country.

The neighboring country Malaysia reportedly has made several arrests in relation to the theft of electricity by crypto miners but this may be one of the first reported cases in Indonesia.

At the sites that are being raided, authorities found 1,314 Bitcoin rigs and 26 people were detained.

Over the previous six months, the suspects are accused of breaking into utility poles operated by the state-owned electricity company PLN and stealing electricity. The state allegedly suffered damages of over 14.4 billion Indonesian rupees ($100,000). In Indonesia, this is equivalent to yearly energy consumption of around 7,500 people.
