Why Apple’s Decision to Shelve Meta’s AI Models Was the Right Call

In the fast-changing environment of artificial intelligence, every company strives to fit the best models into their devices. Apple is no exception. Not long ago, there were rumors that Apple had negotiations with Meta on integrating its AI models into iPhones, which they refused since they didn't want to compromise customers' private data, rightful thought, brought about by several reasons.

There has always been a core value at Apple about privacy. The company has continuously branded itself as working to protect user privacy, quite often in contrast to other big tech companies. Integrating Meta's AI models would have been in glaring contradiction to that, amid Meta's controversial handling of user data earlier. Meta, formerly Facebook, was hit by numerous privacy scandals revolving around users' data; some of those scandals involved the Cambridge Analytica fiasco and multiple data breaches. This would doubtless have raised eyebrows and might have eroded the trust Apple had been building up so painstakingly with its user base if Meta were to align with it.

Another critical point is that Apple has been investing in and making significant steps toward developing internal AI capabilities lately. Only this month Apple released a variety of AI features under one umbrella: Apple Intelligence. By developing and integrating its own AI, Apple will be able to have complete control over the treatment of data and make sure that at no time the privacy of its users gets compromised. Such a strategy not only strengthens Apple's brand image but also innovates within a company that does not depend on any external elements to achieve a technological breakthrough in any area.

Most interestingly, Apple has long shown a willingness to partner whenever necessary if it furthers strategic goals. But at WWDC, Apple just announced a partnership with OpenAI that lets iPhone users use ChatGPT for some queries, a nonexclusive agreement, and Apple is willing to feature different AI models so long as they meet its very high standards on both privacy and functionality. The very fact that Apple has teamed up with Google to roll out the Gemini AI model underlines how committed they are to collaborating only on those areas that will improve the user experience without giving away personal privacy.

On the other hand, Meta doesn't need Apple's platform to succeed. With billions of users across its suite of apps, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, Meta can leverage its ecosystem to deploy AI innovations. Last week's rollout of the Meta AI chatbot in India, its largest market, exemplified how it can independently roll out major AI features to a huge audience.
