Like other people who already commented, I feel like it's similar to the topic of nuclear fusion. It will feel like we're close to a huge breakthrough for a very long time.
I also think that currently a lot of focus is on developing AI, which might result in less effort for the development of quantum computers.

I am currently more optimistic about AI than about quantum computers or cold fusion, I think the later face significant physical limitations while AGI seems possible with classical computers. No quantum computer needed.
