Where is my snow? The crazy weather lately in Alberta, Canada.

The first thing that my friends in Brazil imagined about my life in Canada when I moved in here, it is a life freezing until death and buried in snow. Well for sure it is colder compared to Brazil and also Canada is big and the weather is slightly different in multiple regions in the Country. Canada is a big country with a huge area, we have the northern territories that are considered Arctic climate, with polar bears and tundra. However, most of the provinces don't have the same landscape. I lived in two different regions since 2017. I lived in New Brunswick until March 2022, a region with a winter with many snowstorms mainly coming from Nor'easterns from the East Coast of the USA but still a very warm summer. Yeah, the summer is warm in most of Canada. The East Coast is humid and the summer can get days up to 40 degrees Celsius. I lived there through some heat waves. Now I live for almost almost 2 years in Southern Alberta. Alberta is a province almost on the West Coast, with the Rocky Mountains in the middle of our path. It is dryer weather, so we don't have much snow like New Brunswick usually, but we have more of the cold winds from the artic that likes to come down once in a while, but still, we have some warm winds during the winter called Chinook which makes our temps go above 0 for many times. The summers are dry like the winter, not much rain so we get many problems with wildfires and very dry hot sun. It is hot but less sweating compared to the East Coast. Well, this is the average, but how we are right now?

Everywhere that I live now is very influenced by the Pacific Ocean's phenomena called El Niño and La Niña. These phenomena are known to change the surface water temperature of the ocean. And this makes a lot of differences in the weather in all Americas. Last year it started an El Niño phenomenon and it is one of the strongest recorded until now. These phenomena create anomalies in our weather, but they get stronger every year that they appear again. Our Summer was more dry than before and we had the worst wildfires in our province registered for some years. Even with cold temperatures during the winter some of them are still burning as I read one of these days. Another crazy thing was our winter. My first winter between 2022 and early 2023 here started to get cooler in October with snowstorms and until March we had temperatures around -10 degrees Celsius. Now back to our current winter 2023/2024 it started weirdly. We had our first snowstorm in October, which brought some expectations of a normal winter perhaps. However, after that the temperatures got milder and we stayed in plus temperatures up to the end of the year. In January we had a snowstorm again after almost 3 months of the first one and a cold arctic air shot that brought our temperatures around -40 degrees after that, and maybe more two snowstorms. Now since last Saturday the 17th we are again in above zero temperatures, with everything melting. So I would say that we had 3-4 weeks of regular winter temperatures and snow. I only had one day that was possible to downhill with the kids to do some snow sliding during this season. The weather forecasts seem to be preparing to warm up in the next weeks, so there is a big chance that we aren't getting more snow this season. The winter was very mild. Farmers are very concerned since most of our water bodies depend on the snow accumulated in the mountains that will melt and the snow accumulation wasn't so big this year. I read in the news also that a La niña event is preparing for mid-2024 so probably we will have more rain storms during early summer, with more tornado probability. And they say that usually after a high impact El niño usually comes to a high impact La niña.

The weather every time that a year passes by looks like getting a bit wilder, with more extreme events that create a bigger difference in temperature patterns and also in stronger weather events like tornados, hurricanes, and heat waves. It isn't a local observation, since hurricanes are happening on the East Coast. In addition, I follow some weather abnormalities that happen in my home country, and what is happening is more warm temperatures and heat waves, in addition to stronger rain storms. So nature is more and more acute we are feeling more about its events. Can we change it? Maybe, there is evidence that our impact on the planet somehow is changing its future. Some people don't believe that, and they give examples of failed forecasts like the one saying that our planet around the 2020s would die. It didn't didn't die, but we have some changes for sure. Let's hope for the best, things aren't getting better. So how it is going to be the next 5 years? I don't know. I hope that at least the changes at least hit the break.

I watched the news about the Canada weather in January. Some of my friends there send me video, someone was almost carried by the wind on one of the video and everywhere was white.
But I wish I can take some of that cold and install it on my room cause the heat here is so much in west Africa (Nigeria)
haaahah I can imagine! these places an air conditioner is a must to install tool!
Another in my country using air condition always have the temperature at -16
The weather abnormalities those days is getting extreme. Over here, we bath in our own sweats. Even when in the bathroom showering with cold water, we still sweat.
Its something that needs attention honestly
I understand in Brazil is the same thing, I remember that even the cold water wasn't so cold lol because the water tank was getting the sun so it was warm water with natural heating xD
Lol..
I think it's high time we pay close attention to the news about global warming.
The effects are becoming apparent
yes my friend =(
It’s actually funny how we are crying of heat and you are crying of cold
I’m just so tired of this variation in climate.
We better act fast before it’s really really late.
hahaha different localities, different challenges

To visit Canada is my dream. It is good to know you lived in two different regions in Canada. Dry weather is the most dangerous one. Effective protective measures can save us from the worst effects of this weather. It was good post on a weather visit to Canada.

Thats bad :(
I find this funny and strange at the same time, over here I am facing unbearable hot weather, so hot that even the breeze is hot but here you are battling cold weather. Can't remember what it feels like to feel cold :(
i prefer cold to heat!!
Almost time to set up for a Luau here on the West Coast. 🏝
it was weird this morning in here 3oC!!
You are in a freezing temperature and Nigerian people feeling the heat waves like the waves of hell. I am sure that the Nigerian people must feel jealous of you considering over all situation. I wish temperature could be transferred from one place to another place😅.
Well freezing but less freezing then previous times lol =P
