Surviving to environment fury

  The weather here is so crazy right now. Where I live is very dry during July and August. But this year was different. It is so wet. And in addition, we are having thunderstorms almost every day. Alberta is a very large province, and because of that, thunderstorms are hitting places every day during July and August started the same. At least my town only got one medium-harmful thunderstorm with pea-sized hail. But cities like Calgary were hit already at least 3 times during the last month by bad thunderstorms. Some of these thunderstorms can also produce tornadoes. There was one tornado this weekend in a remote city called Hardisty.

  Today we also have some warnings about possible thunderstorms, and for tomorrow. I have a camping trip scheduled for this weekend in a town 2 hours from here. I hope that I am lucky and don't get any thunderstorms for the two nights that I will be there. A city called Cardston, 1 hour drive from here, had big, huge hail, golf-sized ice. I saw crazy pictures on the internet, like door knobs smashed by the ice. But still, my biggest adventures with weather catastrophes were in Brazil.

  That is a very traumatic story. Rio de Janeiro is a big city with 6.7 million people. I was at an event on the South Side of the city. It started to pour so much rain that all the roads started to flood. I was living in my parents' apartment at that time, without traffic jams the travel time would be around 40min to 60min. But because of all the flooding, my first task was to pass through a tunnel since the North Side, where my folks live, is on the side of the city split by hills. The tunnel was completely congested and stopped because all the streets on the other side were flooded.

  I took more than 4 hours to get home, and after almost losing my car due to flooding, I arrived safely, but I was tired. It was a relief to arrive home. But many people in poor communities that live in slums by the multiple hills in Rio died due to landslides. The mayor of the city decided to improve the drainage of the streets to avoid new events like that, including adding a subterranean pool to store big amount of water that pours in a short period of time, so that the drainage could be fast, since usually the final destination of drainage is the sea which is a long way through the pipes. Only the problem of avoiding landslides is more challenging since you need to remove all the population from these hills and allocate them. That is a current challenge in the city, which is far from the fix.

  Climate is getting wilder, and humanity need to be prepared more. I am considering bringing some soft blankets in my car so I can protect my car from possible damage from big hail. I saw some people using that in some videos. My car insurance covers hail damage, but I still would like to avoid calling them. Every time you use your insurance, your premium goes higher in the next year. I don't live in Rio anymore but I really wish that one day the poor community moves out from risky hill places where they can suffer with landslides.

  O clima aqui está uma loucura agora. Onde eu moro é muito seco durante julho e agosto. Mas este ano foi diferente. Está muito chuvoso. E, além disso, estamos tendo tempestades quase todos os dias. Alberta é uma província muito grande e, por causa disso, tempestades estão atingindo lugares todos os dias durante julho e agosto começou do mesmo jeito. Pelo menos minha cidade só teve uma tempestade de média intensidade com granizo do tamanho de uma ervilha. Mas cidades como Calgary já foram atingidas pelo menos 3 vezes no último mês por tempestades fortes. Algumas dessas tempestades também podem produzir tornados. Houve um tornado neste fim de semana em uma cidade remota chamada Hardisty.

  Hoje também temos alguns avisos sobre possíveis tempestades, e para amanhã. Tenho um acampamento agendado para este fim de semana em uma cidade a 2 horas daqui. Espero ter sorte e não ter nenhuma tempestade nas duas noites que ficarei lá. Uma cidade chamada Cardston, a 1 hora de carro daqui, teve granizo enorme, gelo do tamanho de um campo de golfe. Vi fotos malucas na internet, como maçanetas de portas quebradas pelo gelo. Mesmo assim, minhas maiores aventuras com catástrofes climáticas foram no Brasil.

  Essa é uma história muito traumática. O Rio de Janeiro é uma cidade grande com 6,7 milhões de habitantes. Eu estava em um evento na Zona Sul da cidade. Começou a chover tanto que todas as ruas começaram a alagar. Eu morava no apartamento dos meus pais naquela época; sem engarrafamentos, o tempo de viagem seria de 40 a 60 minutos. Mas, por causa de toda a enchente, minha primeira tarefa foi passar por um túnel, já que a Zona Norte, onde meus pais moram, fica na parte da cidade dividida por morros. O túnel estava completamente congestionado e parou porque todas as ruas do outro lado estavam alagadas.

  Levei mais de 4 horas para chegar em casa e, depois de quase perder meu carro devido à enchente, cheguei em segurança, mas estava cansado. Foi um alívio chegar em casa. Mas muitas pessoas em comunidades pobres que vivem em favelas perto dos vários morros do Rio morreram devido a deslizamentos de terra. O prefeito da cidade decidiu melhorar a drenagem das ruas para evitar novos eventos como esse, incluindo a adição de uma piscina subterrânea para armazenar grandes volumes de água que despeja em um curto período de tempo, para que a drenagem pudesse ser rápida, já que geralmente o destino final da drenagem é o mar, que está a uma longa distância através dos canos. Só que o problema de evitar deslizamentos de terra é mais desafiador, já que é necessário remover toda a população desses morros e alocá-la. Esse é um desafio atual na cidade, que está longe de ser resolvido.

  O clima está ficando mais selvagem e a humanidade precisa estar mais preparada. Estou pensando em levar cobertores macios no meu carro para protegê-lo de possíveis danos causados por granizo. Vi algumas pessoas usando isso em alguns vídeos. Meu seguro de carro cobre danos causados por granizo, mas ainda assim gostaria de evitar ligar para eles. Cada vez que você usa seu seguro, o prêmio aumenta no ano seguinte. Não moro mais no Rio, mas realmente desejo que um dia a comunidade carente se mude de áreas de risco em morros onde podem sofrer com deslizamentos de terra.
