Rebranding zoos to be dedicated in nature conservation.

  Last Sunday we went to the Calgary Zoo, despite of not ending well the visit since my daughter decided to act like a monkey and broke a finger before entering, we had some good fun. In our previous visit, before tha,t we decided to get their annual membership, which allows us to go as much as we want without paying tickets. We did the math and if all our family goes there more than once a year, it is worth it. Kids love animals and they learn a lot every time they go, even if it is more a speedy visit like we had last Sunday.

  The membership and the ticket income don't pay only the salaries of their employees but are also invested in conservation programs. The Calgary Zoo and many other zoos around the world suffered a bit with the new questioning that appeared in the early 2000's about how ethical it was to keep wild animals in cages. Zoos around the world suffer from rare wild animals dying once in a while due to some controversial practices to keep these animals, including in Calgary.

  Right now, the Calgary zoo has programs to rehabilitate animals and release them into nature. That was the case of the Vancouver Island marmot and the B.C. northern frog, among others. In addition, the Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan,s managing genetic diversity, like the lowland gorillas. The zoo even has a baby gorilla in there. In addition, they have so many efforts in creating education programs, including a summer camp that allows kids to learn more intensively their programs. Last Sunday there was an exposition of sculptures of sea animals made from only garbage collected in the seas. Nice piece of art made of garbage.

  Another cool aspect of may zoos like Calgary is that they changed the format from cage + animal. Now you have environments where you can check the animals, and they are on top of the trees or flying around over your head. There is a nice place in Calgary's zoo where you can enter and check the butterflies. My daughter checked that they were breeding Monarch butterflies. These butterflies are endangered due to human activity, and my daughter got excited and saw their pods ready to give birth to new Monarch Butterflies. They also have a place where we can see the Lemures in trees, like the picture below it is pretty cool. The bad is that my picture didn't get so well since they were hidden between the leaves.

  On one hand, we have the past ethical problems that started us to question if zoos are beneficial. However, in the end, many institutions of this type decided to adapt more, allowing to implement projects that actually help these species that are in captivity, and some of them even being released back into nature with success. The educational characteristics of this type of institution are important, and I can see my kids growing more with a better conscience about how to preserve nature and how they can impact our environment, which is very sensitive to our actions. So for me zoos like we have in Calgary are important to exist.

  No domingo passado, fomos ao Zoológico de Calgary. Apesar de a visita não ter terminado bem, já que minha filha resolveu agir como um macaco e quebrou um dedo antes de entrar, nos divertimos bastante. Na nossa visita anterior, antes disso, decidimos adquirir a assinatura anual, que nos permite ir o quanto quisermos sem pagar ingresso. Fizemos as contas e, se toda a nossa família for lá mais de uma vez por ano, vale a pena. Crianças adoram animais e aprendem muito cada vez que vão, mesmo que seja uma visita rápida como a que fizemos no domingo passado.

  A renda dos membros e dos ingressos não paga apenas os salários dos funcionários, mas também é investida em programas de conservação. O Zoológico de Calgary e muitos outros zoológicos ao redor do mundo sofreram um pouco com o novo questionamento que surgiu no início dos anos 2000 sobre a ética em manter animais selvagens em gaiolas. Zoológicos ao redor do mundo sofrem com a morte esporádica de animais selvagens raros devido a práticas controversas para mantê-los, inclusive em Calgary.

  Atualmente, o zoológico de Calgary tem programas para reabilitar animais e soltá-los na natureza. Foi o caso da marmota da Ilha de Vancouver e do sapo-do-norte da Colúmbia Britânica, entre outros. Além disso, o zoológico participa do Plano de Sobrevivência de Espécies, que gerencia a diversidade genética, como os gorilas-das-terras-baixas. O zoológico tem até um filhote de gorila lá. Além disso, eles se esforçam muito para criar programas educacionais, incluindo um acampamento de verão que permite que as crianças aprendam seus programas de forma mais intensiva. No último domingo, houve uma exposição de esculturas de animais marinhos feitas apenas com lixo coletado do mar. Uma bela obra de arte feita de lixo.

  Outro aspecto interessante de muitos zoológicos como Calgary é que eles mudaram o formato de gaiola + animal. Agora você tem ambientes onde pode observar os animais, e eles estão no topo das árvores ou voando sobre sua cabeça. Há um lugar bacana no zoológico de Calgary onde você pode entrar e observar as borboletas. Minha filha verificou se eles estavam reproduzindo borboletas-monarcas. Essas borboletas estão ameaçadas de extinção devido à atividade humana, e minha filha ficou animada ao ver seus casulos prontos para dar à luz novas borboletas-monarcas. Eles também têm um lugar onde podemos ver os lêmures nas árvores, como na foto abaixo, que é bem legal. O problema é que a minha foto não ficou muito boa, pois elas estavam escondidas entre as folhas.

  Por um lado, temos os problemas éticos do passado que nos levaram a questionar se os zoológicos são benéficos. No entanto, no final, muitas instituições desse tipo decidiram se adaptar mais, permitindo a implementação de projetos que realmente ajudam essas espécies em cativeiro, e algumas delas até mesmo sendo reintroduzidas na natureza com sucesso. As características educacionais desse tipo de instituição são importantes, e vejo meus filhos crescendo com uma consciência mais ampla sobre como preservar a natureza e como podem impactar o meio ambiente, que é muito sensível às nossas ações. Então, para mim, zoológicos como os que temos em Calgary são importantes.
