Plur1bus: A good new sci-fi show.

Sometimes life gives us the knife that we needed to spread our butter in the bread. I opened my PC Optimum app ( a type of loyalty program from a big grocery brand here in Canada) and they were offering 3 months for free on Apple Tv. By coincidence, I have been willing to watch the TV show Pluribus for the last 2 months. People have been talking a bit about this series. Maybe what brings too much attention is that it was created by the same writer-producer from "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul," Vince Gilligan. But what actually brought my attention was someone in a server talking about the TV show that was a solid "Sci-fi" associated with aliens controlling people's minds with an interconnected mind.

image.png

At least that what I understood from the Discord talk, which reminded an old tv show called "Dark Skies" where aliens used disgusting biological creatures to enter human bodies and control their minds with a unified intelligence. But in reality, the plot is so much more creative than that. I got it partially wrong, in reality "Pluribus" is about us decoding a mysterious sign from other world. But the sound isn't a binary code, with only 2 different radio frequencies, but in a quarterly system. So then they realize that in reality each frequency means a nucleotide base, the same 4 that form our code of life. In the end, the code is an RNA code and we decided to build it. Probably right now, you are thinking how human curiosity is stupid sometimes. So they built an RNA-based virus. How could this end well?

So this virus is based in a code from another world, more precisely Kleper-22b, a real exoplanet in the orbit of Kleper-22. Of course, they chose the planet based in good real candidates to host life and Kleper-22b is a good candidate in real life. Continuing the story in short. The whole of humanity got infected by the virus, but 12 are somehow resistant to it; 12 people out of billions is not much. Also, one interesting thing is that millions died during the "joining event". So here we meet our protagonist Carol Sturka, a book author, who is one of the virus-resistant people and her partner Helen, who wasn't resistant but died during the "joining event".

As a consequence of this "joining event," all humanity becomes one interconnected being sharing mind and experiences. So everyone knows about everyone, all skills are shared so you see kids knowing how to perform a cardiac surgery. There are no more crimes, humanity becomes more efficient in spending resources and everyone is happy. They also can't kill animals or plants anymore, so that is the major problem with the resources. A big problem is that the new humanity or how Carol calls "The others," know about it and think that this will lead them to their extinction.

image.png

The first season is composed of 9 episodes. I admit that sometimes it is slow, especially when showing the loneliness of Carol since she spends so much of her new life by herself. In the beginning, she is motivated to fight the virus and bring back humans to their regular behaviour, especially after her anger that the virus killed her loved one. She gets upset when she meets other virus-resistant people, and most of them are ok with the situation since they still see their loved ones (even if their minds are shared) or they don't see any problem since "the others" are nice to them. Carol looks like giving up of her lonely task until the final episode, which makes her change her mind again. It is interesting the concept of doubt comes to the protagonist if she is really doing the right thing in fighting or not, this new humanity.

The TV shows have a creative idea about this new type of invasion, where, at least for now, there isn't a clear alien force that wants to conquer worlds, but in this case, an idea. How make all the beings think the same and have the same objective in life, bringing a type of harmony. But at the same time, this harmony also brings the inevitable extinction in a way that we believe it will happen with us with the end of resources. In this new idea, humanity will vanish because it stops using resources, and there isn't a clear way to survive without it. So maybe that is the objective is to show that the alternative for a possible solution for all humanity's problems isn't probably a good one, but of course with great criticism of our current human way of life.

We watched the whole show about 2 months ago. It's really good. and what is even more interesting is how people around the world perceived the show.

Some critics rightfully pointed out that this is yet another White lady savior plot. Others also commented how it portrays an American is the one who is determined to fight, but when she meets the guy from Paraguay (who is even more eager to defeat them) she holds him in contempt - only when she decides to do something, he must follow - a very valid commentary on how Americans see themselves as the default authority.

What do you think the virus is all about? what is the end-goal? I heard some cool theories... what is your?

I didn’t see like that. I think her wish to fight is built on top of her anger. If Helen was alive maybe she would behave like the others, because she had a hole on her, and she started to fill it with soszia. I think that shows a lot how humans are so dependent of social connections . Come on the paraguayan is the bad ass from the show lol. And lets be frank she only came back to the fight for fearing losing her freedom, which the Mauritania guy only don’t join the fight because he feels safe 😹. About the virus who knows but i saw some theories about how the communication between everyone works through radio waves and noy telepathy , it is a good guess that makes sense.

You can definitely see it for what it is - exactly as you described. I find the characters very compelling all the way, so everything they do seems to come from a personal motivation - not based on a social pressures...

While my husband doesn't like Helen as a person, he thinks she is a necessary character. But I like her a lot - I think she embodies hardened person that I can identify with. People tend to read too much into the story from a socio-political lens, and it might not be true, but it's still interesting (they bring good arguments).

I like the theory that the virus is an interstellar weapon designed to limit technological progress. Once a species reached the ability to receive signals, and manipulate biology they become too dangerous (look up "Dark Forest" hypothesis), and so there is a weapon that is designed to target that kind of civilization, and stop it from progressing any further.

Cool theory! It’s interesting how helen character has so much effect even being only in the first 20 minutes of the show 😹
Well actually it would be cool to see the aliens in the next seasons, i really wish for that but i guess part of the diferencial of the show is that probably they will never show up 😹

I agree - I doubt that there will be any actual aliens to see.

While I found the middle episodes unnecessarily slow moving, the overall story is so unique and well done that it is one of the best series I have seen, probably in many years. It is a real shame that we are going to have to wait 2 years for a season 2.

Yah i read about that… it is crazy in old times every new season of tv shows we would be waiting only 1 year 😹😹

I want to see the second season and see what Carol and the Paraguayan guy are going to do. I also think some episodes were slow, but I liked the whole premise of the series. Very interesting.
