Machines will never conquer our hearts.

  The city that I live in is in the middle of the prairies. Every time I exit the town, I face many big farms and big areas with pasture. One thing that amazed me was that I had never seen people working there. I can only see big machines, and most of them aren't populated by humans. There is this big metal thing with holes that cover a huge field area with wheels and is linked to a water hose for example. That goes backward and forward to irrigate the field. It is interesting how agriculture jumped so much in technology when I remember 10 years ago to see fields with many people working in Brazil.

  Recently, there was an interesting post here in Hive talking about examples of technologies that are used in agriculture and how the human workers right now are only behind a joystick just playing with drones and robots that water, harvest and sow the land. For sure the number of workers on a farm reduced a lot. Farmers invested a lot in these machines. Probably they were more expensive compared to months, perhaps years of salaries of regular workers. But probably in 10 years or more, they are saving money with that. However, workers still are needed to control and maybe fix these machines. In addition the knowledge of where and when to execute a farm function.

  I use a lot an apps to identify plants and also I use an app that assesses the health of plants giving you some tips on how to improve your plants' health. However, I know that people who deal daily with farms and crops are more reliable than some artificial intelligence made to help us with that. So I guess that humans are the ones that still can have green thumbs, while machines can try but still far from perfection.

  In addition to the human skills behind the rationale of assessing a problem and finding a way to solve it, there is another point that makes it very difficult for machines to take over humans: human solidarity. One job that for sure is easier to replace, since 98% of it is very mechanical and technical like the cashier position in stores. Automatic cashiers probably are so old and already existed for years. I am a person who started to use them because I am a bit antisocial and I feel that I do my checkout faster when using the self-checkout machines. In one moment I saw stores like Walmart making the human cashiers to disappear completely. However, after a few years, I saw that Walmart and other stores started to put back the old cashier machines that need an employee to manipulate.

  I started to hear on social media that people were boycotting the self-checkout machines to avoid the total replacement of the human workforce by machines. So solidarity at that point started to put pressure on big companies to put back this technical job in the trend.

  The new technology behind machines is amazing, and they are improving the experience of companies and even reducing expenses. But I believe we are very far from the time when automatization will exclude humans from at least participating somehow. In addition, our warm heart still fights for total automatization of positions that could be replaced by machines, and it will take much more time for a machine to get a real heart with compassion like ours.

  A cidade em que vivo está no meio das pradarias. Toda vez que saio da cidade, vejo muitas grandes fazendas e vastas áreas de pastagem. Uma coisa que me surpreendeu foi que nunca vi pessoas trabalhando lá. Só vejo grandes máquinas, e a maioria delas não é operada por humanos. Há uma grande estrutura metálica com buracos que cobre uma enorme área de campo com rodas e está ligada a uma mangueira de água, por exemplo. Ela vai para frente e para trás para irrigar o campo. É interessante como a agricultura avançou tanto em tecnologia quando lembro de 10 anos atrás ver campos com muitas pessoas trabalhando no Brasil.

  Recentemente, houve uma postagem interessante aqui na Hive falando sobre exemplos de tecnologias usadas na agricultura e como os trabalhadores humanos agora estão apenas atrás de um joystick, apenas brincando com drones e robôs que regam, colhem e semeiam a terra. Com certeza, o número de trabalhadores em uma fazenda diminuiu muito. Os agricultores investiram muito nessas máquinas. Provavelmente elas foram mais caras em comparação a meses, talvez anos de salários de trabalhadores regulares. Mas provavelmente em 10 anos ou mais, eles estão economizando dinheiro com isso. No entanto, ainda são necessários trabalhadores para controlar e talvez consertar essas máquinas. Além disso, o conhecimento de onde e quando executar uma função agrícola.

  Eu uso muito aplicativos para identificar plantas e também uso um aplicativo que avalia a saúde das plantas, dando algumas dicas de como melhorar a saúde das suas plantas. No entanto, sei que as pessoas que lidam diariamente com fazendas e plantações são mais confiáveis do que alguma inteligência artificial feita para nos ajudar com isso. Então, acho que os humanos são aqueles que ainda podem ter o polegar verde, enquanto as máquinas podem tentar, mas ainda estão longe da perfeição.

  Além das habilidades humanas por trás do raciocínio de avaliar um problema e encontrar uma maneira de resolvê-lo, há outro ponto que torna muito difícil para as máquinas substituírem os humanos: a solidariedade humana. Um trabalho que com certeza é mais fácil de substituir, já que 98% dele é muito mecânico e técnico, como a posição de caixa em lojas. Caixas automáticos provavelmente são tão antigos e já existem há anos. Sou uma pessoa que começou a usá-los porque sou um pouco antissocial e sinto que faço meu checkout mais rápido quando uso as máquinas de autoatendimento. Em um momento, vi lojas como o Walmart fazendo desaparecer completamente os caixas humanos. No entanto, depois de alguns anos, vi que o Walmart e outras lojas começaram a trazer de volta as antigas máquinas de caixa que precisam de um funcionário para operar.

  Comecei a ouvir nas redes sociais que as pessoas estavam boicotando as máquinas de autoatendimento para evitar a substituição total da força de trabalho humana por máquinas. Então, a solidariedade naquele ponto começou a pressionar as grandes empresas a trazer de volta esse trabalho técnico na tendência.

  A nova tecnologia por trás das máquinas é incrível, e elas estão melhorando a experiência das empresas e até reduzindo despesas. Mas acredito que estamos muito longe do momento em que a automação excluirá os humanos de pelo menos participar de alguma forma. Além disso, nosso coração caloroso ainda luta contra a automação total de posições que poderiam ser substituídas por máquinas, e levará muito mais tempo para uma máquina obter um verdadeiro coração com compaixão como o nosso.
