Learning to look for sales saves you money.

  I remember watching an interesting show on TV when I still was dependent on cable TV. The show was about coupon hunters in the US. In the show, I remember that the people in the show were trying to save the most they could using coupons they received by mail or found around in their groceries. I was amazed at how they could save in their shopping with these coupons. People shop around 100$ or more of value and in the end, spend getting their final bill very close to 0$. In Brazil, it is impossible to think of something like that. Groceries make sales in flyers but usually still aren't the best prices.

  I came to Canada a while back thinking about maybe here they could have a similar system. Yes, there are coupons but in a very reduced amount size. Once in a while, I find one or two coupons worth using, with some products that I usually buy, but it is rare. However, I learned to buy in a different way. The grocery flyers have nice deals on products, but you need to wait for them to show up. Using the flyer deals you can save money, but you need to be smart and buy these things only when they show up in flyers.

  Of course, this type of shopping is more difficult when we think of products that we need every week and they have a short expiring date length, like milk. But we can use that with meat. There are two or three mobile apps in Canada that gather all the supermarket weekly flyers that are renewed every Thursday. We aren't vegan in our family, we eat meat. The flyers help us save a lot of money with meat since it is one of the most expensive products in our shopping, especially with the hike in inflation.

  Nowadays, meat sales are focusing more on pork which we can find under 10 CAD/kg, so in our week's menu pork meat is much more present nowadays. However, we still want to introduce salmon to our menu, if not every week, once in a while. So we wait for a good price under the real market value which is very expensive, costing more than 35 CAD/kg. We used to buy salmon under 20 CAD/kg when I got here, now we are lucky if we find around 29,90 CAD/kg. So we wait until a flyer comes with a sale like that so we can buy salmon, sometimes we even buy more and freeze it. Another good sale that we always buy is when some groceries sell 5kg of chicken breast for a good price. We store everything in our chest freezer and then we have chicken for a month or two maybe.

  This behavior allowed me to save some money, instead of buying meat whenever I needed to and being forced to accept any value that the grocery wanted to impose on us on that day. If you have a tight budget you should do that here to survive. But still, we need to suffer with some necessary items that we can't wait for sales. Here in Canada, you need to keep an eye out for that but be careful, most of the groceries that make meat sales aren't the best to make the whole shopping. So I just go there and buy the items on sale and go home.

No programa, lembro que as pessoas tentavam economizar o máximo que podiam usando cupons que recebiam pelo correio ou encontravam em suas compras. Fiquei impressionado com o quanto eles podiam economizar nas compras com esses cupons. As pessoas compravam cerca de 100$ ou mais em valor e no final, conseguiam reduzir a conta final para perto de 0$. No Brasil, é impossível pensar em algo assim. Os supermercados fazem promoções em folhetos, mas geralmente ainda não são os melhores preços.

  Eu vim para o Canadá há algum tempo pensando que talvez aqui eles pudessem ter um sistema semelhante. Sim, existem cupons, mas em uma quantidade muito reduzida. De vez em quando, encontro um ou dois cupons que valem a pena usar, com alguns produtos que costumo comprar, mas é raro. No entanto, aprendi a comprar de uma maneira diferente. Os folhetos de supermercado têm boas ofertas de produtos, mas você precisa esperar que eles apareçam. Usando as ofertas dos folhetos, você pode economizar dinheiro, mas precisa ser esperto e comprar essas coisas apenas quando aparecerem nos folhetos.

  Claro, esse tipo de compra é mais difícil quando pensamos em produtos que precisamos toda semana e que têm um prazo de validade curto, como leite. Mas podemos usar isso com carne. Existem dois ou três aplicativos móveis no Canadá que reúnem todos os folhetos semanais dos supermercados, que são renovados todas as quintas-feiras. Não somos veganos em nossa família, comemos carne. Os folhetos nos ajudam a economizar muito dinheiro com carne, já que é um dos produtos mais caros em nossas compras, especialmente com o aumento da inflação.

  Hoje em dia, as promoções de carne estão focando mais em carne de porco, que podemos encontrar por menos de 10 CAD/kg, então no nosso cardápio semanal a carne de porco está muito mais presente atualmente. No entanto, ainda queremos introduzir salmão em nosso cardápio, se não toda semana, de vez em quando. Então, esperamos por um bom preço abaixo do valor de mercado real, que é muito caro, custando mais de 35 CAD/kg. Costumávamos comprar salmão por menos de 20 CAD/kg quando cheguei aqui, agora temos sorte se encontrarmos por volta de 29,90 CAD/kg. Então, esperamos até que um folheto venha com uma promoção assim para podermos comprar salmão, às vezes compramos até mais e congelamos. Outra boa promoção que sempre compramos é quando alguns supermercados vendem 5kg de peito de frango por um bom preço. Armazenamos tudo no nosso freezer horizontal e então temos frango para um mês ou dois talvez.

  Esse comportamento me permitiu economizar algum dinheiro, em vez de comprar carne sempre que precisava e ser forçado a aceitar qualquer valor que o supermercado quisesse impor naquele dia. Se você tem um orçamento apertado, deve fazer isso aqui para sobreviver. Mas ainda assim, precisamos sofrer com alguns itens necessários que não podemos esperar por promoções. Aqui no Canadá, você precisa ficar de olho nisso, mas tome cuidado, a maioria dos supermercados que fazem promoções de carne não são os melhores para fazer todas as compras. Então eu só vou lá e compro os itens em promoção e volto para casa.
