From Google Translate to AI Chatbots: The struggle of language learning vs instant translation.

  I was using Google Translate before AI chatbots, and I admit that the translation is so bad with it. One of these days a friend of mine didn't understand a comment made by a user. I laughed when I read. The post about Splinterlands cards, and the user commented about a letter. The user is a Spanish speaker, so in Spanish, the word "carta," which is used for cards, can also mean "letter"; that's probably a bad Google translation. But chatbots act differently and can see the whole context of a sentence and make a proper translation. So now, I can even read posts in German, Japanese and Chinese, which are far from my regular Latin and Anglo-derived knowledge. But that means that I know all the languages?

  Of course not. It is so weird when I see people posting in languages that they don't know. Some of them get criticized by the community. Once, I saw the Chinese community hammering users from other countries that were probably using AI to post in their communities. Probably, it was clear that they were using AI, so the posts were losing originality from the authors. I agree with that, it is much better to write in your language and let the reader translate using AI tools. That way we still keep our own creativity in the texts and avoid deception.

  I think that learning new languages is important for us to create new neural connectivity. For example, I am a native Portuguese, but I was lucky that my parents paid for an English course when I was still a child and by other luck, I had family in Argentina, where I could practice and learn a bit of Spanish. I also had some Hebrew in my childhood, but I lost it, despite of still knowing how to read it. But I am still curious to learn more languages.

  When I moved to Canada I was offered some free French courses, and although I am still not an advanced student in the language, with some Portuguese and Spanish basics, allowed me to learn the language faster since many of the rules are similar. But now I have my ultimate goal of learning Japanese, well, at least I am trying. I have been doing Duolingo, which I think isn't enough to learn a language, especially when using a different alphabet. And Japanese grammatical rules are totally different from the rest that I learned, but at least one thing that is trivial when learning a new language is forgetting a bit about your mother tongue; not translating is important.

  AI can help with some communication in immediate contact, but still we can learn new languages to practice our brain and become more natural in certain needs of our lives, like a job or even a friend or a family member of your girlfriend that doesn't speak your language. Of course, we can learn and make our brains stronger. Don't forget that if we get too lazy, there are neurodegenerative diseases that are just waiting to appear in us.

  Eu usava o Google Tradutor antes dos chatbots de IA, e admito que a tradução dele era péssima. Um dia desses, um amigo meu não entendeu um comentário de um usuário. Eu ri quando li. Era uma postagem sobre cartas de Splinterlands, e o usuário comentou sobre uma carta. O usuário fala espanhol, então em espanhol, a palavra "carta", que é usada para cartas, também pode significar "carta"; provavelmente foi uma tradução ruim do Google. Mas os chatbots funcionam de forma diferente e conseguem entender todo o contexto da frase e fazer uma tradução adequada. Então agora, eu consigo até ler posts em alemão, japonês e chinês, idiomas que estão bem além do meu conhecimento habitual de latim e línguas derivadas do inglês. Mas isso significa que eu conheço todos os idiomas?

 Claro que não. É muito estranho quando vejo pessoas postando em idiomas que não conhecem. Algumas delas são criticadas pela comunidade. Certa vez, vi a comunidade chinesa criticando usuários de outros países que provavelmente estavam usando IA para postar em suas comunidades. Provavelmente, era óbvio que estavam usando IA, então as postagens perdiam a originalidade dos autores. Concordo com isso, é muito melhor escrever em seu idioma e deixar o leitor traduzir usando ferramentas de IA. Dessa forma, ainda mantemos nossa própria criatividade nos textos e evitamos enganos.

Acho que aprender novos idiomas é importante para criarmos novas conexões neurais. Por exemplo, sou falante nativo de português, mas tive a sorte de meus pais pagarem um curso de inglês quando eu ainda era criança e, por outra sorte, tinha família na Argentina, onde pude praticar e aprender um pouco de espanhol. Eu também tive algum contato com o hebraico na minha infância, mas perdi o conhecimento, apesar de ainda saber ler. Mas continuo curiosa para aprender mais idiomas.

Quando me mudei para o Canadá, me ofereceram alguns cursos de francês gratuitos e, embora eu ainda não seja uma aluna avançada, ter algum conhecimento básico de português e espanhol me permitiu aprender o idioma mais rapidamente, já que muitas das regras são semelhantes. Mas agora meu objetivo final é aprender japonês, ou pelo menos estou tentando. Tenho usado o Duolingo, o que acho que não é suficiente para aprender um idioma, especialmente quando se usa um alfabeto diferente. E as regras gramaticais do japonês são totalmente diferentes das outras línguas que aprendi, mas pelo menos uma coisa que é trivial ao aprender um novo idioma é esquecer um pouco da sua língua materna; não traduzir é importante.

  A IA pode ajudar em algumas comunicações de contato imediato, mas ainda assim podemos aprender novos idiomas para exercitar nosso cérebro e nos tornarmos mais naturais em certas necessidades de nossas vidas, como um emprego ou mesmo um amigo ou familiar da sua namorada que não fala seu idioma. Claro, podemos aprender e fortalecer nossos cérebros. Não se esqueça de que, se ficarmos muito preguiçosos, existem doenças neurodegenerativas à espreita, prontas para se manifestarem.
