forgetting is important

A school friend of my daughter came from the same city that we also came from, Moncton. Her grandparents still live there, so they decided to visit them. Yesterday they posted a picture in Parlee Beach, a close by seaside beach that we used to go a lot during hot days. I showed the picture to my daughter and she said, "I don't remember this beach. We are talking about something that was 4 years ago only and she forgot. To be frank, even I remember so little when I was 4 or 5 years old, only some moments like the time that I got chicken pox or when I had my soccer party birthday for my 5 years old. I lost many memories in time and space, but what if I could remember every little thing with an implanted chip that could help me remember everything?

Do you know that there is a condition called hyperthymesia where the person can remember everything with precision? It is a rare condition and the interesting fact about it is that those who have it in general also have obsessive tendencies similar to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The memories stay there forever and they continue to think about these memories over and over again. So remember too much makes us think a lot in the past.

In addition, remembering details may cause us to be confused by not focusing on the important details for us. For example, my 5-year-old birthday, I remember about specific scenes, such as the beautiful cake details. But I don't remember details like friends that were there, specific date. For me, the important scene of that birthday was how the cake was beautifully decorated with soccer players like a soccer match. Our brain trims memories to avoid overloading our storage system, but in addition, we keep the important memories that we think of about each memory.

Another important part is forgetting something that hurts you. For sure, some traumatic events can be remembered forever. But we don't remember every single fight or every time that we got hurt. For example I suffered bullying in high school I remember some scenes and feelings, but not day-to-day life with that. And I suffered for more than a year. It would be painful to remember all the details of those years for me. The trauma would be worst and I woudn't be able to focus in my present and future.

Our brain is amazing and forgetting isn't a passive action as we thought. Our brain prunes memories like we trim gardens to avoid growing up so much in an active way. That way, the more important memories grow stronger and aren't lost in the middle of the "memory jungle". With a chip storing all the memory that we live in, we will also need a good processor beyond our current technology to process all the data. To find the memories of your wedding will probably take some hours to retrieve the data, depending on how it works, you will be willing to wait for some answers, like that? It won't be enough time to finish a test for a job or university.

Mostrei a foto para minha filha e ela disse: "Não me lembro desta praia.

O trauma seria pior e eu Não conseguiria me concentrar no presente e no futuro.

Indeed, hyperthymestic syndrome is most commonly observed in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where memories become more vivid and recurrent... In my clinical practice, I have seen some cases of epilepsy where highly detailed memories are generated. However, human memory is reconstructive and imperfect, it distorts, and the brain tends to fill in gaps in information

Yes you are correct! As an example in my memory cited for sure we can’t say is 100% accurate!! Thanks for incrementing the thought :)

Of course, we are inherently creative beings, and so is our memory, it embellishes our recollections, sometimes for better or for worse...

Haven’t you ever remembered a childhood place so fondly, as if it were a paradise, only to revisit it years later and find it’s not the same?... Well, your memory filled in the gaps with beautiful things tied to emotion and played a little trick on you 😉.

A big hug🫂🤗🌻

Raised some good and important points. Although there are scientific explanations to to why forgetting is important and how it is part of the human cycle, above all, I think forgetting is what makes us human and forgetting is what makes memories, especially. If you remember everything then and they different special moments in our lives won't be cherished by us. Throughout the rest of our lives. They will just become normal things and not something look forward to.

I have always seen the body as the most magnificent entity in all of creation. The thought of it being a machine is quite overwhelming and mindblowing sometimes. Just see how beautifully you portrayed that in your write up with the sizing of memories to avoid overloading the brain.

We are imperfect, and that imperfection is what makes us Human. A chip can’t recreate those emotions tied to our memories. It's alright to forget, it makes us feel more lighter and move on, and it's ok to suddenly recall certain things atimes....that's the beauty of the human brain.

Thanks for sharing.

Forgetting isn't a problem for me, most of my younger years are a blur. I think I picked up my dads memory, he couldn't remember much of his childhood either. And high school, a blank for the most part, not that there was a whole lot of real value to remember.

Being able to forget traumatic events is a good thing! I have some traumatic events from the military and my work that I would love to forget but are burned into my mind. Good old PTSD!

I'm glad you've blocked out that old trauma, the brain is elastic and erasing trauma is one of our survival adaptations. Great post!
