End of the year in family, an covercome challenge

My brother arrived last Sunday. It is an interesting reunion. He has two kids, so my daughters have two cousins that I did not even know that they existed quite much. The last time, my oldest daughter was 3 years old, so 4 years ago. We last visited them when they were still living in New Jersey. So it was interesting, especially my daughters were expecting too much this visit since they feel a bit of envy of their colleagues who reunite with their family every holiday.

I wasn't putting too much good expectations in this reunion, since my brother has lots of requirements during his visit. He is vegan and imposes also some big restrictions on his kids concerning electronics, toys and etc. We are now on day 2 of the visit. Everything is going great, the main courses still don't contain animal products, but for example tonight we are getting hamburgers at home, but at least mine will be regular ones! But the most interesting is how the kids are having fun themselves. And it is also nice to play with my nephews.

Creating a bond with them is really interesting since we never had much contact. The oldest is very interested in science, he likes to memorize things that in my point of view shouldn't be prioritized like what DNA means as a name. In my point of view, understanding isn't the same as memorizing names or functions. But I have been trying to push a bit him to leave this zone of memorizing and maybe learn of what DNA can do in our bodies and other living beings. He is still very young, I was trying yesterday to understand what he knows about concepts, such as life, for example.

He answered me that something that is living thinks and grows. I gave him examples of non-thinking living beings and asked also to explain what is growing for him. He cited an example of a plant that starts as a seed and grows. So I told him about viruses and bacteria. they don't have the same pattern. He started to get confused so I stopped! He is still in grade 3. I think he has a good potential but I told him that he needs to bring the answer to me in the next time we see each other. The youngest one was playing with me in the YMCA pool yesterday and we were enjoying a bit of kids playing and imagination.

This afternoon we are going all together to watch Sonic 3 in the movies. Everything is going great and I had some opportunities to talk with my brother he impressed me that he is changing some of his life which I always thought that he needed to do. Such as thinking about his professional life which seemed not doing so well for him. He decided to go back to his initial psychology background and do a masters in the area so he could start a career. He had many mental health problems in his current job for the last 10 years. So spending this week is very different from what I imagined now.

Meu irmão chegou no último domingo. É uma reunião interessante. Ele tem dois filhos, então minhas filhas têm dois primos que eu nem sabia que existiam. Da última vez, minha filha mais velha tinha 3 anos, então, 4 anos atrás. Nós os visitamos pela última vez quando eles ainda moravam em Nova Jersey. Então foi interessante, especialmente minhas filhas estavam esperando muito dessa visita, pois sentem um pouco de inveja de seus colegas que se reúnem com a família em todos os feriados.

Eu não estava colocando muitas expectativas boas nessa reunião, já que meu irmão tem muitas exigências durante sua visita. Ele é vegano e também impõe algumas restrições grandes aos filhos em relação a eletrônicos, brinquedos e etc. Estamos agora no segundo dia da visita. Tudo está indo muito bem, os pratos principais ainda não contêm produtos de origem animal, mas por exemplo hoje à noite estamos comendo hambúrgueres em casa, mas pelo menos os meus serão os normais! Mas o mais interessante é como as crianças estão se divertindo. E também é legal brincar com meus sobrinhos.

Criar um vínculo com eles é muito interessante, já que nunca tivemos muito contato. O mais velho é muito interessado em ciência, ele gosta de memorizar coisas que no meu ponto de vista não deveriam ser priorizadas como o que DNA significa como um nome. No meu ponto de vista, entender não é o mesmo que memorizar nomes ou funções. Mas eu tenho tentado empurrá-lo um pouco para sair dessa zona de memorização e talvez aprender o que o DNA pode fazer em nossos corpos e outros seres vivos. Ele ainda é muito jovem, eu estava tentando ontem entender o que ele sabe sobre conceitos, como a vida, por exemplo.

Ele me respondeu que algo que é vivo pensa e cresce. Eu dei a ele exemplos de seres vivos não pensantes e pedi também para explicar o que é crescimento para ele. Ele citou um exemplo de uma planta que começa como uma semente e cresce. Então eu contei a ele sobre vírus e bactérias. Eles não têm o mesmo padrão. Ele começou a ficar confuso, então eu parei! Ele ainda está na 3ª série. Eu acho que ele tem um bom potencial, mas eu disse a ele que ele precisa me trazer a resposta na próxima vez que nos vermos. O mais novo estava brincando comigo na piscina do YMCA ontem e nós estávamos curtindo um pouco de brincadeira de crianças e imaginação.

Esta tarde estamos indo todos juntos assistir Sonic 3 no cinema. Tudo está indo muito bem e tive algumas oportunidades de conversar com meu irmão, ele me impressionou que está mudando um pouco sua vida, o que eu sempre pensei que ele precisava fazer. Como pensar sobre sua vida profissional, que parecia não estar indo tão bem para ele. Ele decidiu voltar para sua formação inicial em psicologia e fazer um mestrado na área para poder começar uma carreira. Ele teve muitos problemas de saúde mental em seu trabalho atual nos últimos 10 anos. Então, passar esta semana é muito diferente do que eu imaginava agora.
