Choices define our path.

We humans tend to label a good person and an evil person. I prefer to label as good/bad choices, but still, what is bad for someone may not be so bad for the other. But we still can label as bad what is not accepted by the society that we live in. I was watching a nice TV show that I only discovered now called "The Rookie". There are amazing sketches there, despite being all created stories, they debate some ethical dilemmas. And there was an interesting episode once.

The episode brought an experienced police officer training a new police officer, a rookie. Both are war veterans, so the experienced police officer understands the challenges of migrating from the military to the police department. He explains to the rookie that you need to switch your brain; in the military, you are fighting against enemies. But in the police department, you are enforcing the law to make your community as better. In this case, they aren't facing enemies; they are facing citizens like anyone else who make bad choices. If you rob or kill someone, you aren't an enemy; you made a bad choice.

People are making good or bad choices all the time, sometimes they don't think about the consequences before choosing it. One of these days I heard an amazing podcast about Revenge Science. The interviewed person was an experienced person in the field. It is interesting how he went into this field. As a teenager, he had an experience living in a farm in the country of the US, but he wasn't raised in a farm. Because of that he suffered with some bullying episodes by other farmers' kids.

The bullying got into an extreme event when the kids visited his farm and shot his dog and exploded the mailbox at his home. In the last episode, he was angry and got a gun and went behind the two/three kids. When it was time to confront the kids, who were unarmed, he had an amazing insight. What would happen if he pulled the trigger and could kill these boys? He thought about his future and how this could ruin all his future. So he stepped back and forgot that. So he was now motivated to pursue a law career and later investigate more of the principles of revenge.

I am not here saying that criminals need to be unpunished. But they can't be seen as an enemy, like when we are at war against an enemy. They have rights like me and you. But for some reason, they commit a crime, a bad choice that can ruin their lives. Many criminals don't think about the consequences of killing someone. There are many stories of people hunted by those whom they killed in the past. They didn't have the reason to think about what that revenge specialist did before pulling the trigger of his gun. Of course that this excludes psychopaths, which lacks empathy and have some mental health problems associated and can't have any maturity to make this type of judgement. But still everyone of us is always making internal judgments, and the bad choice is always there.

That if we consider the free will and we exclude our destiny is already pre determined by the phisics laws theories 😅

Anyways for me sociopaths, serial murders are such are a waste of oxigen and should just be terminated... Well any murder or raper... In general winners decide what's good or bad, if Germany won ww2 they would be the good and others the bad, and you would belive this

If they had won the war, I probably wouldn't be here!

I understand what you said, but not quite true. Even if they continue with the systematic killing of certain groups of humans as a correct idea, still, killing is considered wrong. Just because a country or society implements it doesn't mean that it is good to kill someone. The death penalty, for example, is very controversial. Ok, in theory, they do that with high-profile crimes like some of the ones you mentioned, but still, it isn't very well accepted even in places that do something like that, like many US states.

For sure, our understanding of what is good and bad changed through the centuries, but usually humanity has a general agreement. But I am not saying about things like who is the bad or good in the current conflicts, since there is a bit of disagreement about it, and probably there isn't a completely good side in each case. But in moral decisions like, general killing, sex with minors etc there is some general world agreement about these topics whether they are good or bad.

Eh it still depends on indoctrination on moral decision ... I think it's general consensus that a woman forced a burqa, stay at home, stay behind the man when walking is bad, yet women accept it as normal for the indoctrination since youths ... Even infibulation, we know it's bad, for them it's the norm because it's how it is teach

So many of those bad choices made is often due to a mental health problem. Here in the US rather than treat the underlying issue they lock them in prison, which doesn't fix the problem. It's sad really... Some people who truly lack empathy may belong in mental hospitals for life, but the solution here is always prison.

Some people make bad choices like the situation of the bullied kid, but he had sense enough to figure out the consequences before he pulled the trigger. This world is a messy and imperfect place.

Transitioning from military to police work is a tough thing. Many still want to keep the military mindset, and many police departments are really overly militarized here in the US. Why do police need to have access to assault rifles? Just one of the many things I've complained about for years. Too bad no one listens!
